Leslie Switch
« on: June 16, 2008, 10:39:24 AM »
Witch switch do you have and which one do you prefer?
I like the trek switches because they are easier to flip. But the one we have is nnow backwards. When its on chorale, it spins fast, but when it says tremolo, it spins slow. Anybody know how to change it back?

Half moon switch all day dude!  As far as changing the switch config, just take the switch off and I think you can reverse the wires.  Not 100% sure of that or how savy you are when it comes to electronics.

Scratch that idea.  What kind of Leslie are you using?

Its a 147. I'd rather mess with thier organ. I remember once, the sound tech was moving the leslie, and the switch kept reversing, maybe I will try kicking it a few times :D . But this last time, the swich was reversing by itself. ?/?

When you say reversing, are you talking about the speed change or is the switch function actually reversing?  The Leslie 147 might have a mechanical relay and moving it around might cause the relay contacts bounce from one side to the other.  Just a shot in the dark.

Bad doc   ;D  I wouldn't ever trade in the old fashioned switch.  There's a local church we visit sometimes and they have the switch on the expression pedal and it can be cool but I often forget it's down there.

I know whacha mean man! I used to play for a church that had a BX-3(don't waste your money on one)
and there was a switch on the pedal as well as a traditional half moon switch! But my foot would sometimes
involuntarily hit the switch! Maybe I'm just old school!! ;)

under13: Has the switch always been that way? If so, it sounds like the wiring is reversed. Another possibility is the motor plugs on the Leslie amp were switched around. Check the Leslie amp. The fast motor plugs should be on the left and the slow motor plugs on the right (the fast motor plugs are brown and the slow are white). If they are in that order then it's very likely the wiring in the switch. A very simple workaround for this is to reverse the motor plugs so the slow motor plugs are on the left and fast to the right.

The wires from the switch that connect to the wires on the Leslie kit aren't polarized so it definitely sounds like to me the wiring inside the switch assembly isn't right.

As for switch preference, I like the good ol' halfmoon switches. I did play a C3 that had the TrekII switch and it was okay. I've also played a Hammond A100 that had a 6122 style switch (a small box mounted under the console rail, has 2 white knobs) and hated it. I bought a halfmoon for my Hammond CV.

Or maybe you got some big boats for feet.   ;D
Anyways, what don't you like about the BX3?  I have a CX3 that I take to gigs sometimes and I love it.  Definately beats the organ sounds in the keyboards.

Its to change the speed of the rotors in the leslie speaker.  When it is spinning slow, It looks something like this. It kinda thows the sound around the room. So if you are playing in a small room with good acoustics, you will heard the sound bounce off the walls.

You really just gotta feel it. Sometimes If I'm playing a hymn, I will use tremelo for the verses and use slow for the refrain.

After you have been playing for a while, You will just knda know when to change.

I've been guilty of changing speeds quite a bit. I didnt even notice it until I was watching my youtube video

Most musicians switch it when ever they feel that they need to but most of the time it sounds better when you hold out a chord and switch it form either fast-slow or slow-fast .

I don't think I'd want to use one for doing a church service but it's nice for doing blues, reggae, jazz, etc.

How does one do this on the keyboard?
I sometimes play around with the modulation wheel & drawbar settings to create that sound I always hear from organs.
Does that have the same effect as the Leslie effect?
