Has anybody tried this ???
« on: July 23, 2008, 02:07:21 PM »
Has anybody, present, past or in the future, purchase a Trace Elliot Bass amp of any type of model? I'm still
gaining knowledge about the variety of bass amps, cabs, and basses that are on the market for sale or
trade. That's why I love about coming to this site almost daily, to get the "TRUTH" from people much more
knowledgeable than me about these subject matters. Two more questions, why does 4 ohms vs a 8 ohms
bass cab, seem to be the ohms of choice? And are speakons cables "all that and a bag of chips" ? Thanks
in advance for all of you who will answer my questions. I'm sure your answers will not only inform me but that others will also learn something that they didn't already know.

....why does 4 ohms vs a 8 ohms

Your amp will deliver more power to a 4 ohm cab than to an 8 ohm cab.  Some people like 8 ohms because then they can pair cabinets (2 8 ohm cabs are the equivalent of 1 4 ohm cab).

And are speakons cables "all that and a bag of chips" ? ...

I don't know.....does that bag of chips come with hot sauce?

But seriously, I prefer the speakons because they have a positive lock when connected.  No accidental tripping over the cord and pulling it out of the amp or the cab. That could ruin your day.  I don't know if it improves the integrity of the sound delivery.  Maybe someone else can weigh in on that.

Peace,

James

Question #1:  Never used a Trace Elliot Amp.

Question #2:  I think it depends on Configuration, and amp.  Lots of amps have a 4 ohm load meaning that's what it can handle safely.  If you put  (2)8 ohm cabs together or (1)4 ohm cab  your get the maximum wattage out of the amp... So I would say it depends on the configuration to get the maximum wattage.

Question #3: I don't know all the advantages of Speakon cables, but here is what I've heard:
1.) They lock in so you don't have to worry about them being pulled out.
2.) I've also heard higher power handling/ less likely to short out... I don't know alot about this kind
    of stuff.

As far as ohms go, I think its more about getting wattage out the amp as well as versatility.  If you have a 8ohm cab, there are some amps that only run at 4 or 2, so you would have to get Another 8 ohm cab to pair in order to run your head.  Also, like my GBE 600, its like 175 watts(somethin like that) at 8ohms, but 475watts at 4 ohms.   So if you want more than 175 watts, you got a little more to think about.  8 or 4 or 2 ohm cabs arent good or bad, its just the preference.  I have a 4ohm cab cause I dont plan on adding to it, where as I know ppl that want 8ohm cabs because they want to pair them with other cabs to push more air.

Trace Elliott is a very reliable company.  They were the joints back in the day.  Ive used their amps quite a few times.  Only thing is most of their gear is like the old school weighty ones.  I dont think they have designed anything to keep up with the lightweight craze so thats something to consider.  Nevertheless, you cant go wrong with TE.
Praise Him!
