I wouldnt go that route unless the musician is competant. I've seen too many guitar and bass players just get in the way and not really play out.
If there is someone in the congregation who has potential, I would try to have them trained by the bass player so that they can fill in when needed. But dont just throw someone up there because they own a bass
Man you have hit a good point. This is what i have been wanting to tell my P&W leader...let us train people.
You see what has happened in our church is that our last MOM had to leave, then the drummer had to play keys. He also plays bass and is quite good. They had to get this young dude to play drums.
Then i came along as a secondary keys player (strings and all that). Then two other guys came along as keys players. I am like this makes no sense. We only have two boards and FOUR keyboard players so we shuffle around. God help us should it be the turn of one of the keys players and he doesn't know the song.
I don't want to complain and hurt anyone's feelings but i have been wanting to tell the P&W leader that, look, let the old drummer go back. he is SICK on drums. Let me play primary keys and let the other dude play secondary keys. This way we can have a stable and well-balanced music team without all the unnecessary shuffling and so on.
This way if our bassist should leave for a while, the drummer can fill in and we have that young fellow on drums and we still keep me and another fellow on keys.
Sorry for the rant but its just bugging me that we are doing things this way and i have no one to tell. I hardly have any say in anything.
