The day i have been dreading has come.
« on: July 28, 2008, 07:56:35 AM »
...or rather the WEEK i have been dreading.

Our bassist is taking a week off. So is the other keyboard player/ drummer. This leaves only me and another guy on keys and a young fellow who can keep a basic beat on drums.

Man am i nervous!!! This means i have to play Wednesday, Friday AND Sunday.

 :-\ :D ;D :-\ <---- <Happy and very nervous at the same time smiley combo>

I have to start playing bass lines now. :(

What really sucks is the fact that we are so used to hearing the bass player that it just doesn't sound the same without him. I can't play the bassline to "Friend Of God" by Israel. We are just going to have to make do not having that bass line in teh chorus.

I'll pray before each service of course.

How many people, in your congregation, are musicians?

Here is the musician make-up in my church:

- There is Bro Malcolm who plays the bas full time.

- There is Toks who plays drums, bass and keys.

- There is Segun who plays keys.

- Then there is me and i play keys and guitar.

- There is Tolu who plays drums.

This week it'll be just 2 keys players and a drummer. I could play bass but its not the same as a guitar and it would be sloppy, very, VERY sloppy.

You didn't answer my question. You told me who is a member of the music ministry. I asked how many people, in the CONGREGATION, are musicians?  It's a completely different question.....unless the members of your music ministry are the only members of your church.  ?/? :D

Correct. The members of the music ministry are the only musicians in the church.

Correct. The members of the music ministry are the only musicians in the church.

Ok. Then, the remaining members of the congregation aren't going to really miss the bassline in, "Friend of God" because they've probably never really noticed it before, they just sang the song and clapped their hands. Feel me?

As a good friend of mine says, no one in the congregation knows what you DON'T know.  ;)

I'll let that marinate fo' a minute.

I wouldnt go that route unless the musician is competant. I've seen too many guitar and bass players just get in the way and not really play out.

If there is someone in the congregation who has potential, I would try to have them trained by the bass player so that they can fill in when needed. But dont just throw someone up there because they own a bass

Man you have hit a good point. This is what i have been wanting to tell my P&W leader...let us train people.

You see what has happened in our church is that our last MOM had to leave, then the drummer had to play keys. He also plays bass and is quite good. They had to get this young dude to play drums.

Then i came along as a secondary keys player (strings and all that). Then two other guys came along as keys players. I am like this makes no sense. We only have two boards and FOUR keyboard players so we shuffle around. God help us should it be the turn of one of the keys players and he doesn't know the song.

I don't want to complain and hurt anyone's feelings but i have been wanting to tell the P&W leader that, look, let the old drummer go back. he is SICK on drums. Let me play primary keys and let the other dude play secondary keys. This way we can have a stable and well-balanced music team without all the unnecessary shuffling and so on.

This way if our bassist should leave for a while, the drummer can fill in and we have that young fellow on drums and we still keep me and another fellow on keys.

Sorry for the rant but its just bugging me that we are doing things this way and i have no one to tell. I hardly have any say in anything.

You should make that suggestion and see where it leads. Because, it's a GREAT suggestion. Period.

I don't think I'd know how to act if we had other musicians besides me and the drummer.

You'd be fine. You've gigged with other musicians so you know what to do.  ::) ::)

Well there was this time when the pastor's daughter was going to play keys.   The problem was she wasn't used to playing with other musicians.
And don't be rolling yer eyes at me Fenix.   :(

So what happened? My bassist is very experienced so when i first started out he adjusted to my playing...by turning his volume to cover my nonsense until i got better. ;D

She didn't stay around long.  I was willing to adapt but her idea of compromise was doing everything her way.  I wanted to rehearse the music to make sure we was on the same page but that never happened.
