She didn't stay around long.  I was willing to adapt but her idea of compromise was doing everything her way.  I wanted to rehearse the music to make sure we was on the same page but that never happened.

Well think about it this way. She has been playing by herself and is not used to hearing sounds she cannot control. So, she wants to do everything her way so that she knows what do do. She probably does not want any strange sound cuz she may not know how to respond to it.

At least thats how i was at the beginning.

Somehow, Fenix, I think you're gonna ride herd over this thing.

berbie

AMEN!!!

So, you're gonna ignore me, huh? Dat's cool; hold on to you insecurities, then. Last time I try to help ninjas, I swear...

What did i do?  ?/? I don't get it?  ?/? ?/?

Fenix,
I am inclined to agree with you.  She was in her comfort zone.  It takes some effort to get out of that zone and I guess she wasn't willing to do it.
She wanted to kick me off the organ which is okay but she wasn't all that good as an organist and it was throwing off the choir.  :-\

But i did. Which is why i am still confused.

Look, its not the congregation i am worried about, its the choir and their reaction that i am worried about. I hate to get the Wave of Death.

Honestly i am not petrified. I will play what i can and God be praised. Plus there are two of us going to be playing. If i don't know a song, the other guy should be able to pick up. We will be fine.

The "Wave of Death"? What the heck is that?  ?/?

As for the choir, they know dude's not gonna be there; so, they need to suck it up and deal. Besides, I'm sure it'll be better than they think, anyway.  ;)

You don't know the Wave of Death.

Its the hand wave the singer gives you when you are messing up. It says "Stop, just...stop. We'll take it acapella from here. Thanks fro trying though."

It WILL be good by God's grace.

i definitely know the feeling .. my drummer and bass player both skipped out on me for summer vacation last week ... i ended having to double stack my keyboards to fill in the bass and grabbing a 10 yr old drummer from another church to fill in.  but church went on and we did what had to do.

I do understand  your frustration though because we have newcomers all the time and I want them to see the best but I have to remember that it's not us doing the work, its God.

Wow!!!

I can't believe Fenix has not yet understood what Sjon was saying..even after being given a minute for the stuff to gel in :-\ :D

Fenix, all that sjon was saying is something like this:

Anyone who cannot recognise a fully diminished chord or the most basic & traditional gospel form of a 2-5-1 progression, will not FEEL THE GAP that the bassist is not there.
You just play your thing & don't throw any1 off, I promise you, every1 will be coming to you & telling you how sweet everything was :D ;) ;D

But then from there you need to learn how to split your board & play the simple basslines that you post here..if you have the rhythm, everything will sound super :) ;)

Now the acapella thing comes in when you are playing something that's really distracting the choir instead of help it :D

Fenix,
I am inclined to agree with you.  She was in her comfort zone.  It takes some effort to get out of that zone and I guess she wasn't willing to do it.

Hehehe..we had a player who was like that before..he was good alone, but for some of us who knew how things would sound if he was not playing alone, we didn't enjoy the music so much >:(

Most of these days I just prefer backing up..there is so much room to experiment there..so I don't quite get it why others don't want to play with others :-\

This Sunday went very, very well thank God. I was glad. It was just me and another guy on keys and a drummer. No bassist and all. I played a minimal bassline and chords and the other guy filled in. It was very nice.

One big hiccup though, our monitor speakers didn't work so i had to be hearing myself through the house speakers. It was disconcerting at first but everything worked out just fine.

I was in the same situation, it was just me and the drummer. The Bass player dipped on us, The Piano player went on vacation.. we had a acoustic guitar player, but she didnt even use the amp, so I couldnt hear her.

Now you can imagine what I have to go through sometimes, especially at some "funny" venues.
& you get all those green-eyed stares when you say you can't hear yourself & switch up you volume or rather opt out of playing..

Oh yeah i also forgot to mention that i had to play for a service of songs on Saturday. My very first time playing hymns in the open.

It went well, but i had to use the piano sound since i don't know how to play organ?

Sadly my choir does not know how to sing hymns so they kept missing cues and stuff. We seriously need to start singing hymns. I am going to suggest it to the P&W leader. The choir did not know ANY of the hymns, not even To God Be The Glory.

I was shocked!!
