Any New James Hall Songs In Your Church?
« on: December 29, 2007, 12:54:20 AM »
J. Hall is too progressive and radical for the churches at which I play, and he's just not that popular in the Detroit area period.  Have any of you tackled any songs from James Hall's newest album?  Are your choirs singing any of them in your churches?  I plan to play around with some of them soon.....just to improve and to keep my chops going .....

right . the very luck few are able to do it, but mostly in Detroit the others are traditional, lite contemporary, and won' let WHitfield go.   :)   Now, i AM going to show the AME Zion Great is our God by James ( 1999) Let's try that.
I'm not finished playing

Exactly, and this is why not many churches play his music! too abstract for many musicians to follow!  Bishop Cole

I think that we can all agree that gospel music has evolved over the years, and that it will continue to evolve just like everything else (technology, clothes, hairstyles, etc.).   What's interesting is that his music will probably be the norm across the country in about 20 years.  Playing and singing music to that level of complexity will probably be easy to us.....we'll see.  The guy is truly ahead of his time!

At my church, we have only sung 2 James Hall songs, "God wants a Yes" and I'm Not the Same". James Hall songs are my favorite because of the style that they are played in. Many choirs as mentioned before do not sing them because of the complexities and voicings of the songs. Some musicians wont tackle them for that same reason. His old stuff is not that bad but i have been listening to his newest album live at foxwoods and there is alot of things in each song.
