Hey man, sweet progression.

I am tempted to say it is in B major, with the DM7 acting as a passing chord. Try adding a BM7 to the end of the progression and see how that sounds. I liked the sound.

fenix you are 75% right it is in someway in the key of Bmaj, but really it is based on the Ab min blues scale of the #4/b5. now with that progression you put

Ebmin11
Dmaj9
Dbmin9

do this after you play the Dbmin9

Sustain the Db/ and play this run Ab-E-Db-Eb-B-Db

then play this

Db/BEb
D/CF
Eb/DbGb
Ab/CGb
Db/CEbF

hope this helps

So in short it IS in B major, Ab minor being the relative minor of B major. Thanks.

I'm gonna have to agree wit my boy musalio here.  The key I'm hearing is Dbm/C#m, which would put u in the relative major key of Fb/E.  I would play those chords like this:

Eb / Ab-Db-F
D / F#-A-C#-E
Db / Fb-Ab-Cb-Eb

Then add a little bass line riff:  Ab, Db, Eb, Fb, Eb, Db

Now, that sounds a lot like B major as well, but the problem with that to me is the black key Bb/A#.  When I try to run that B/Abm scale and hit the black note Bb/A# it sounds like I'm out of key.  But, when I run the E/Fb major scale, it sounds in key.  What u think Fenix and Joe?

Hmm, the Bb shouldn't be a problem if it is a B/Abm scale cuz the Bb is simply the 2nd of the scale.

However i suppose you could skip that Bb and run the Ab as a minor pentatonic scale. Also it could depend on what chord you are hitting that Bb with. If you hit it while playing the Dmaj7, it would sound off.

However i still maintain that that Dmaj7 has got to be a passing chord. It sounds too much like a passing chord. You could play the Ebm11 and Dbmin9 without that chord in there and it would still sound good. You can't play the Ebm11 and Dmaj7 as progressions by themselves, it would sound incomplete.
I need to be in front of my board to hear this.

Skipping that note is part of the problem.  If a certain key fits, then all the notes of said key should sound good.  The problem I see with the key being Abm/B major is that 2nd scale degree note doesn't fit with either of the chords.  However, all the notes of Dbm/E major does fit with the 1st and last chords.  I agree that the DM9 is a passing chord.

well really my assessment is it is really an Ab minor blues scale because of the D which to me represented as a #4 or a b5. but with the stuff that I came up with you can changed it into Ab major or Fminor. However you can use it among the key of E major/Db minor, but What I came up with is Ab minor blues scale.

Well i dont...

...and i appreciate my fist making friends with your face. ;D

Actually if we are in teh key of B, then the Bb is not a problem and fits. The actual problem is the F which is not in B. If the key is Eb minor, then why the Dbm9 chord? The chord that goes before a minor chord should be a dominant 7th. Since we are assuming the Ebm11 is a i chord in its minor scale, then that Db should not be a minor but a major.

I think we may be over-thinking this though.

I havent played it, but it seems to not have enough chords to call a key definitively, one way or another. But it might sound a certain way.

Yeah that is true. The whole progression is begging for a resolution. I chose B as the key cuz when i played BM7, it resolved nicely to me.

I've never come across something so confusing, really guys! :o

I tried several times to play around this--At 1st it seemed that Cb was going to be the key, but it failed the tests somehow..

E/Fb seemed to work, it passed other tests..
But then guess what, A/ Bbb surprised me :o it sounded like the key.
I know many might disagree, so I compiled this as proof:

 Key of A/ BbbM

Eb/Ab-Bb-Db-Eb-Gb  [Ebm11]
Ebb/ Gb-Bbb-Db-Fb  or Ebb/Bbb-Db-Fb-Gb  [EbbM9 / DM9]
Db/ Fb-Gb-Ab-Cb  or Db/Gb-Ab-Cb-Fb  or Db/ Ab-Cb-Db-Fb-Gb [Dbm11] {this is a 3}

resolves to..a 6-2-5-1
[6] Gb/Fb-Gb-(Ab)-Bbb-Db
[2] Cb/Eb-Gb-Bbb
[5] Fb/Ebb-Gb-Bbb-Cb
[1] Bbb/Cb-Db-Fb-Bbb

Now I'm really confused..

Fenix, it would help if you gave your voicings, it doesn't take much time.
