What is this beat called?
« on: August 25, 2008, 07:07:53 AM »
I was listening to my new Yellowjackets CD, and I was intrigued by this drum beat. I tried counting it, but my count just wouldn't sync up. Can you guys tell me what it's called?

Is it a 6/8 beat?

This is the song "Yahoo" from their Lifecycle CD.

11/8. Now, try counting it.

Ok. I hear the count now.

I like that drum beat. Marcus Baylor is probably my favorite drummer. I saw the Yellowjackets in concert last year, and this dude held his pocket--but when it was time for him to come out....

:o

Jimmy Haslip, the bass player, hangs right there with him. They lock tightly together. I can't remember a song where these two weren't locked.

The spooky part was that most of the time, his eyes were on the audience. He has a crazy gaze! Plain-faced too!

You can see that gaze in this video.

And the dynamics that I like here! It's not just all blast!

The interview.
