2 Leslie's
« on: August 15, 2008, 07:08:07 AM »

Are there really any advantages of having two If the one you have is mic’d up properly....

Also, Is anyone familiar with the Pro 8 HA 8000 HP Amp?

For a church setting, one properly mic'd leslie is good enough. I dont think adding another leslie adds much more decibels

I've been to quite a few large churches with multiple leslies, and to some large ones with one leslie, and the one speaker going through the main speakers sounded very good.

How big is the church?

This site has some interesting info on the leslie speaker:

Two Leslies on either side of a church would be really nice but if you have a stereo PA and mic the Leslie with two mics on the horn and one on the rotor, you'll get an equally nice sound.

Church is a 1,500 seater ..Not too big. ..I guess I never understood the purpose of 2 Leslie's if everything is going thru the house or besides the fact that it looks good...  But is it really increasing the sound clarity of it

I always use SM57s on the horn and a Beta 52 on the bass rotor.  SM58s on the horn would work also.  On the bass rotor, you need a mic that will pickup frequencies down to 30 Hz.
I would avoid using condensors unless the Leslie is isolated from the other instruments.  If you do use condensors, be aware they might clip from the high sound output.

WELL TO MY KNOWLEDGE THE STORY BEHIND HAVING A MULTI LESLIE SET-UP GOES BACK TO WHEN SOUND SYSTEMS WEREN'T THAT ADVANCED IN CHURCH BUILDINGS!

THE WHOLE POINT OF THEMWAS TO NOT MAKE THE ORGAN LOUDER BUT TO BE ABLE TO HEAR SOME TYPE OF DIRECT REFENCE OF THE ORGAN RATHER THAN HEARING AND ECHO OR DELAY OF THE ORGAN.

IF ANY OF YOUR EVER NOTICED IN OLDER CHURCH MOST CHURCHES WOULD HAVE A LESLIE SET-UP ON BOTH SIDES OF THE CHURCH.

OR FOR ALL OF THE COGIC MEMBERS IF YOU EVER NOTICED AT MASON TEMPLE, PENECOSTAL TEMPLE, ETC, THERE ARE LESLIE'S ALL OTHER THE PLACE. BUT NOW SINCE THEY HAVE UPDATED SOUND SYSTEMS ALL/MOST OF THEM ARE UNPLUGGED.

SO TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION, IF YOUR SOUND SYSTEM IS ADVANCED ENOUGH TO SUPPORT A ORGAN JUST GET ON LESLIE AND MIC IT UP AND BE DONE WITH IT!!! lol

I`ll just address the multi-speaker part of your question; it touches on a complex topic that deals with the way the organ is played, and the room accoustics.  I`ve always liked 2 Leslies because they double the "Leslie Effect", while adding more clarity and definition; extra sound aside.  What`s more; by controlling the speeds seperately---yet another important dynamic can be added to the music.  The bottom line is that the sound is comming to your ear from a lot more places as it scatters-out almost randomly from the source in ever more interacting waves.  How you use it all is determined by your needs and abilities.  This is a fun subject that I see little about anywhere.  If anyone has an interesting story to tell, I`d like to hear from you!
