Is is hard?
« on: April 13, 2006, 05:16:17 PM »
I have a question, but first I would like to commend al of your musicians.  I don't play anything but I sing but I would really love to learn to play the piano/keyboard.  My question to yuo is, Is it hard to learn to play?  Please give me some suggestions and tips and just plain old advice.  I do have an ear for music but I feel my fingers are not cordinated enough with my brain to play it.  Talk with me please.

Right place. I'm a beginner and I would like to say, practice patience. You're gonna need it when you start playing. Most musicians here will answer, so don't get frustrated. they will answer and give great advice.

You can also put in the search box up top your ? and see what advice has been given. I know the first question/answer will be if you know theory. BTW, my fingers aren't coordinated either, but w/practice and PRAYER and prayer and PRACTICE lol, my speed is up to par. it will come to you.

To answer your ?, it's hard if you make it. Be Blessed.

Playing is not hard. I use to play with one finger and now I am playing chords. I would have to say God did it. It was not me but God. I started playing at the age of 32. I can sing but could only play like one song on the keyboard(something my sister taught me) I think that music has to be in you. If you can play little things on the piano, then maybe you should try to sing and play for yourself. This is what I did. I started playing because I felt that God had more for me to do. When I finally figured it out, I was like I can't do this. Some people laughed at me and tried to discourage me. I kept going because this is what God lead on my heart to do. It was hurtful at times because I was so stiff. My sister would tell me to loosen up. It took a lot of practicing everyday. I talked to other musicians and some didn't want to help. Other musicians were too busy to help me learn. So I just decided to pray about it because I know God told me to do this. I prayed and kept practicing. Today I play for 3 choirs. Praise God! I have olders musicians asking me to teach them something. Now that is God. You can do it too. Pray about it.

Also what helped me was I found this site. This site has been a major blessing in my life.

Make sure you Pray and ask the Lord to touch your hands and your mind. He will make your learning process go quicker then you would think.

I'm a beginner myself, and I also sing.  I've been singing way longer than I've been playin.  I know for a fact its not hard to learn.  Music itself is fairly simple.  There are only 12 notes on a piano (that keep repeating over and over again).  There is a formula for everything that is played.  Every scale is linked, every chord related in some way.  So learning a scale becomes the building block for learning the major chord of that scale.  Learning the major chords of that scale become the building block for learning the minor chord of that scale.  This kinda things keeps going all the way through all the 12 notes on a piano.

The part of learning to play that requires the most work is the technique.  Teaching the fingers to correctly reproduce whats playing in your head.  This is the part that requires the hours.  This is where practice and patience comes in.  It is being committed to the process of becoming familiar with the piano.  Just like singing, at first you, like me, were not all that confident about your voice and what you could sing.  The more you did sing, the more familiar you became with your own voice, your own sound.  You just need to develop that on the piano.  The good news is because you have done it before you can surely do it again.  May HE continue to put songs in your heart that we may look forward to hearing one day as you hone you skills on the piano.

I play the drums, and when i started, my own mom kicked me off...lol... but i stayed obedient in God's word... i practiced, fasted and prayed. I wanted to play the drums more than anything, but more importantly, i wanted to play for God more than anything. i cant explain how i got to where i am, in the natural sense that is... but in the supernatural, God has blessed me... stay strong and prayerful... ask, seek and knock... be specific with God... but wait for His answer...

I'm a beginner too, I just learned the c major scale and can play the melody notes of a tradition hymn. But I want to learn how to play for a soloist, or accomp for myself. I started out at a small church that didn't have a musician. Everyday I would practice so that I could at least play the melody of hymns during service. Now there is a talented musician who comes and play for us at church and I felt alittle put-out. When no one would play I tried so that we could have some music, now there's another to take my place at church. Anyway I'm not complaining about that, I just want to learn to play for me, I've always wanted to play the keyboard I'm willing to practice and learn. Anyone with any information for a total beginner please help.

Welcome to the site!

First, if you're trying to learn "just for yourself", then you can do that at home. If you want to play in church, then you should be trying to learn to help the ministry. That's really the bottom line. This is my personal opinion: I feel that if people are there for themself, then I don't need them. I'd sit them down.

Lastly, don't feel bad when new people come in that are more skilled, rejoice! Ask them for help, and record their playing. If you do that and continue to practice, you'll learn to play.
