What is the best board?
« on: October 17, 2008, 12:19:49 AM »
I play alone sometimes with our singers and I have to use the preset beats in my Roland EXR-5s.

I am looking to upgrade, what are good suggestions for keyboards to travel with.  I prefer a 61 key , will get a 76 key if needed.

since you travel a lot, I'd suggest a mo6. I think it has great sounds for gospel music and its light weighht. I'd also consider a pre owned roland xp-80 or 50.

Yeah U13 is right, the MO6 is a great lightweight board and very portable.

If you want the BEST board...why not go with the Motif XS6?

It all depends on what he will be using it for. If you are going to use it as a studio, and a sampler and all that extra stuff, then go for the XS, but if you just plan on playing, then there isnt a need to spend twice as much for stuff you might not ever use. What is your budget?

And i really hate the screen on the XS, its very hard to scroll through sounds.

Yes, I agree it does depend on what he'll be using it for.

But he DID say he plays alone and uses the preset beats on his Roland.

That makes me think he might want to take advantage of the XS and it's greater Polyphony and create his own stuff.

I agree on the XS screen.  The screen on the Roland G however..... :o

I would even nominate the MM6, over the MO6.

I wouldnt. It doesent even have sliders, which is very important for organ sounds and layering, which are essential to the gospel musician

Disagreed.

Disagreed.

Maybe he shouldn't have used the word 'essential'.

Important is probably a better word.  I had an MO8 and layering was very helpful during live services (using the sliders to raise and lower strings/piano to add atmosphere, etc.)

This is why i LOATHE the Fantom in church and, given the choice, i would not play it. The Fantom, to me, is a good controller board, but i would not use it as my primary board unless i had no choice.

Funny enough the ES8 we had had been sitting in church and no one knew (or bothered to find out) how to layer and split until i came along.

Ok. I'll take back my MM6 nomination. I don't like Roland boards, so when he said "preset beats", I assumed it was a crappy board. Even though I STILL think Roland is crappy, maybe the MO would be better or the XS. It depends on what he wasn't to do.

I don't need a workstation, so the MM6 is good enough for me.
