I need the old heads opinion
« on: October 18, 2008, 07:14:44 PM »
What's up fellas, THIS IS FOR THE OLD HEADSI got an intresting predictament and i need advice. I'm involved with a college ministry and I am the drummer for the praise and worship team. I was asked to play due to my feel and creativity and i was asked to be creative. however, iv'e noticed a spirit of control in the way, that they assembled this creative bunch and now they what us to be a cookie cutter group in everyway as far as sounding like the exact recording of the CD. This genre of music which is supposed to be a mixure of gospel and christian but conveniatly they pick majority of the time christian rock. (this is a white church) I'm writing because (this is wat burns me up) they want me to immulate the beat, fill and feeling of the song. I v'e been playing gospel/R&B my entire career and it just comes out in the feel. So my question is do i stay or bounce because this ministry takes up a lot of precious time and i get NO PAY. My issue is that i can't get comfortable in order to approach the song cause im thinking about the recording drummers approach (rocker white guy).
this can be a great oppurtunity for ministry, Definatly, the singers are very happy with my style and they support me but, i feel very disrespected by leadership cause they don't respect my style or input But the leadership has this controlling spirit that they want to hear the same thats on the recording.

Use this opportunity as a time for growth. You say they want you to play like the CD? Then, take the material home and shed with it until you understand what it is that they are asking you to do.
As a drummer, you must be versed in many styles/genres , not just urban genres. Christian rock is not like Gospel/R&B/Hip-Hop. There's a method to the music. Rock fills are more open (BIG). Where as Gospel/R&B fills tend to be more rudimental or choppy. The feels are different. You can't approach Rock like you do R&B. You need to be able to adapt to what the situation calls for.
I've had the opportunity to play for a community church not too long ago, and when we did rock, I played like a rock drummer. When we did gospel, I played like a gospel drummer. I've played on country showcases where I was told to play exactly like the CD, rock demos, and jazz performances and none of them are the same as far as feel. Let the music use you, and you not use the music. It's not about you, it about the music.
As far as money, don't let that be the reason for you not learning and growing. The money will come as you continue to learn and hone your craft. Follow and be open for instruction and you'll be just fine.

I agree with BeatBoxer and to add to what he said...

You were placed in this position by God to grow and be prepared for your next level. Don't think that you have a choice actually to leave it because that means that you will miss the reward of that assignment which is actually in working through the process of the assignment.

On the material side of things. Contemporary Christian Music sells a lot more CDs etc than Urban Gospel Music so there is a higher chance of opportunity for you to get to play in a higher level gig/more high profile gig. As well your tool pallet and feel gets the opportunity to expand. Keep doing what you have always done and you'll keep getting the same result, if you expect something different to happen without changing yourself you fall into the category of being insane. Remember Romans 12 and "renew your mind." Welcome this opportunity to grow in wisdom and strength (applied knowledge is power)in the kingdom and in your musical experience.

Well said Beat and Sabe.  I'll just sum it all up by saying a true musician is not judged by how much skill he or she has, but by their ability to adapt to the situation.  If you are looking to branch out in your playing, then you need to be ready to do musically whatever is asked by those in control.  No "spirit of control" is in this.  Those in charge are simply doing their job.  You have a choice to be in agreeance or not.

Are you saying that if they paid you you may be more willing to bend?
When you've done your very best, do even better.

Dude stick with them!!! With the way the music scene is going your best bet is to get pluged into your local church because thats where all the opportunities are.

I know this for a fact! I play for an all white church, doing the whole CCM thing. I didn't start getting payed untill last year after being with them for 3 years. As a resulth though, I've gotten to play with a few big name christian artists, got countless payed gigs as a result of the exposure and I've learned a lot and developed my craft. I just got finnished playing a revival with Kyle Matthews (writer of We Fall Down sung by Donnie McClurkin) and now I'm his first call percusionist! So stick in there Bro!!
