I've been thinking about this thread since I first read it. I thought back to he first season of "Gospel Dream." There was a girl auditioning and singing a song with lyrics talking about "he's my man, he's a good man, and I love him." I thought it was rather unusual. The judges seemed to think so as well. They told her that it was a gospel music competition. She replied that she was singing a gospel song. She never got to the "God" part so how would anybody know? Plus her delivery was somewhat sultry so she had it all wrong in my eyes. In an attempt to be creative, she got a little too extreme with it.
Some people try to package it so that the mainstream appeal stands out more than the actual goal of the song which should be to minister and inspire. Doing this can cause the message to get lost. It has happened with many artists. Plus some artists want to make sure they can get the sales as well because a gospel label will drop you just as quick as a secular label if you're not making them any money.
