Gonna get a new bass head....which one though?!?
« on: November 12, 2008, 09:10:56 PM »
I live about 3 hours from the nearest Guitar Center, and NONE of my local music stores carry any of these heads, so the only way Ill get to try em out is to get it in the mail, see how i like it, and if im not pleased....send it back lol! But I want some of you guys (LGM Members) to lemme know if you've tried any of these amps out and let me know. BTW ill be pairing one of the following with a Carvin 410 (400watts/8ohms)

http://bass-guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Nemesis-RS400-Bass-Amplifier?sku=481821

http://bass-guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Peavey-Tour-700-Bass-Amp-Head?sku=480315

http://bass-guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Markbass-Little-Mark-II-500W-Bass-Head?sku=481746

I'm really favoring the last two just because With em both, I'll still pull over 300watts with one 8ohm cab alone. That being said.....I wouldn't ever have to worry about bringing along extra weight (115 or 210 extension)to have good volume unless I just ABSOLUTELY needed it!!!!

Thanks in advance!!!!
Keys, bass, drums, trombone, I sing a lil bit too lol

I'm inclined to say try out the Littlemark LMII or if you have the cash, the Genz Benz Shuttle 600w model. You should also consider the new GK MB500.

Yeah it's a hump to Raleigh from out east...

from your given selections, I'd say the Nemesis.  Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but this is basically the "solid-state" production line from Eden.  Once you decide which you want, start looking on ebay.  A lot of music stores move new products through ebay auctions/buy it nows/best offers... I've gotten new, expensive, items for close to %50 off (bass heads and cabinets)...

kevykev, if you want that Peavey Tour 700, have i got a deal for you. looking to sell mines ($400) to get a more travel friendly head since ive been playing at our conferences and have to get on the train since i dont have a car and those churches dont have no equipment. Its a great amp and i never even have to go halfway on the volume, and even sometimes then im too loud.

i've been lookin at that new GK head. lighter than the markbass LMII and sounds better (in my opinion, so thats all that matters for me)

Here's my 2 cents. I would get either the Nemesis or the Markbass. I've owned a peavey setup and sold it quickly to get my current Eden rig. Yes the nemesis is solid state, but sounds real good. I've played through one. Eden's tone is good, and I'm sure you've probably heard that many of times. I've also heard nothing but great things about Markbass. I've actually considered getting a small Markbass gig rig. Something like 2x10 combo, so that I won't have to take my 410 cab everywhere. I'm not a fan of Peavey anymore. Atleast, they don't compare to there older products.
Keep God first and he'll do the rest!!!

I agree with you on that... I started off on peavey equipment.  It's durable as heck, but I could never get the "sound" I wanted.  Furthermore peavey seems to have done away with all their tubed preamps.

I like the MarkBass LMII. I like the MarkBass F1 even better. Smaller, lighter, same output. The price on the F1 has been dropping because GK has just started selling an F1 size box for $599. Guitar Center has been offering both MarkBass amps and the GK amp at $599, so it's kind of like, pick one.  Played through the GK last week at Guitar Center. It's nice.

Both MarkBass units andthe GK have only one instrument input, so if you are accustomed to having two basses at a particular session, you'll want to consider having an input splitter (I use a Morley like the one below) or something like a Radial ToneBone that allows you to switch between instruments and EQ / volume set them differently.

Here's my opinion.  Get the Peavey Tour 700.  I've had it for over a year and it's so durable and it sounds so good.  I leave everything flat and let my natural bass sound come through and I haven't found a better sounding amp yet.  I have a SWR 4x10 cab.  I've tried Eden, GK, etc.  But with my setup nothing beats my Peavey Tour.  Everybody that has played through my setup loves it.  This alone taught me its not what amp you have but how you eq it and what kind of touch you play with.  I seen a guy play through a Beringer setup and it sounded awsome.  I've had guys that had Eden play through my amp and pick mines over theirs to play through.  They'll literally go put their stuff back in the car and ask can they play through my setup.  I love the sound of my bass coming through that amp.  Also, you'll have enough power for just about every gig you'll do.  However, I am considering getting that new miniture GK head to add to my collection just because it's so small.

I have the MarkBass F1 (same size as the GK MB500) and I have a rack setup with an Alembic F-1X preamp and a Crown Xs500 power amp.  The Alembic / Crown rig sounds AWESOME!!!  Guess which one I use most?

The MarkBass weighs about 8 pounds.  The Alembic / Crown rack weighs about 45 - 50 pounds.  I use the Alembic / Crown rack at home and the MarkBass drops into a gigbag pocket or a backpack whenever I play out.  Don't be surprised if you find yourself in the same bag.

Peace,

You KNOW I gotta cosign on the shuttle lol.  I love it more everytime I plug in.  If it came down to your choices though, LMII all day long.

I've checked out the Shuttle 3.0 and was blown away by it (my local music store). Of course i would want the 600watt version....but that $699 would be a little out of my range. The markbass is pushing it at $599. One thing I forgot to mention though, Im a little short on cash (expecting a baby anyday now) so I'm relying on my dear musicians friend credit card pull me through on the bass amp.

I feel ya bruh and congrats on the addition to the fam. As much as I would love to advertise for ampeg on this subject I have to go with the markbass. That little thing is a monster. if you can afford the markbass or the shuttle in the future then you wouldn't be making a mistake either way.
I must fight with my praise.

Please , for the same price you can get the Carvin 1200 Bass head ( which blows aways every head mention here in this thread )I mean you have a Carvin  4x10 cabinet  so why not get the head to match ,and if you don't like the head you can send it back
I bought one just to have it as a backup ,but I use it regulary with my 4x10 Bergatino cabinet and it's killing

Exactly, which unfortunately, I'm unable to do. Like I stated once before. Whatever I purchase will have to be from Musiciansfriend.com so I can use my musiciansfriend credit card. Thanks for the the info though!
