Need Songs for a begining youth choir.
« on: September 14, 2003, 05:05:56 PM »
Please help me out.  I need some nice songs that wouldn't be too hard for a youth group that is just starting out.  I need quite a few songs because this would be their first time coming together and we need songs that will build their confidance and let them know that they can do it.
Thanks,
SisTree

What are the age ranges in your choir, because if you have little kids (5-10) mixed with big kids (11-17), you want to minister songs that aren't too wordy or mature for the little kids, and songs that are also not so "kiddy" sounding to the big kids.

Since you're starting out, you might want to teach the songs in unison, so they can learn and hear the melody, any song you choose could be sung in unison, here are just a few to get your mind jogging:

(you could also choose to do a hymn and add your own flavor to it by adding a contemporary sound to it and making your own arrangement of it that suits your choir)

*~ "This Is The Day" (traditional)
~ "This Little Light Of Mine"
*~ "Thank You Lord" by Mississippi Children's Choir
*~ "Praise Him" (praise Him when the sun goes down)
~ "Oh How I Love Jesus"
*~ "Lift The Savior Up" (Olanda Draper/Joe Pace)
~ "Higher Higher" (lift Jesus higher)

Once you feel they have singing the melody down, try two-part harmony. You can implicate two-part in any song you choose. And from there, three-part harmony.

Here's a few songs that would be great for a beginning children's/youth choir...very simple, very little harmony, and many not all can be sung without a lead (with any song you choose, you can leave out certain parts to it, like with Kirk Franklin's "He Reigns Medley", you could leave out the verse, "You're marvelous and you're glorious..." and just sing the chorus then the vamp, "He reigns (3x), forever and ever", that way, it's not that many words for your kids to sing, and it's a bit easier for them to learn).

*~ "We Worship You Oh Lord" (Youth For Christ)

*~ "Lord I Lift Your Name On High"

*~ "He Reigns Medley" (Kirk Franklin)

*~ "Kumbaya" (Kurt Carr)

*~ "In The Sanctuary" (Kurt Carr)

~ "Leaning On Everlasting Arms" (Rev. Timothy Wright)

~ "Yes, I'm A Believer" (Rev. Timothy Wright)

~ "I'm In Love With Jesus Christ" (Rev. Timothy Wright)

*~ "We've Got The Victory" (Hezekiah Walker ...makes you work yourself out on the piano or organ...lol)

~ "Throne Of Mercy" (Mississippi Children's Choir)

~ "Inside Out" (Mississippi Children's Choir)

~ "Blessed Is The One" (Mississippi Children's Choir)

*~ "Holy Lord" (Danny Eason)

*~ "I Love You (Lord Today)"

*~ "Cry Holy" (GMWA Youth Mass Choir)

*~ "It's Time To Praise The Lord" (John P. Kee)

*~ "I Will Dwell" (GMWA Youth Mass Choir)

*~ "Worthy To Be Praised" (GMWA Youth Mass Choir)

*~ "Yes God Is Good" (TM Mass Youth Choir)

*~ "We've Come To Worship Christ" (Tyrone Block/New Direction)

*~ "I'm Holding On" (National Youth N Praise Mass Choir)

~ "I Just Want To Thank You" (Youth For Christ)

*~ "Victory Chant" (Donnie McClurkin/Shout Praises Kids Gospel)

* = can be sung for praise and worship
