Ampeg Anyone?
« on: November 15, 2008, 10:15:27 PM »
I've been cruising through the pages and I've noticed that most of the the Bassist in the forum have switched over to the lighter heads and cabs.

My question to those of you who have, is the sound as robust as the heavy units like mine?

I still bump the Ampeg-610 powered by an Ampeg B2R which is ran passive into a 1200 watt fender power amp.

What, other than the obvious (Weight of the Rig) persuaded you to switch?

Also what reason(s) do you shy away from Ampeg cabs?

Good Point! The rig I have is one of the last American Ampeg rigs they manufactured, I actually pick it up here in St. Louis from a employee of Ampeg.
When they were in the process of closing the facility he bought up as many pieces as he could, and then sold them out right. To say the least I got a great deal on the cab. I also wouldn't buy an Ampeg cab that wasn't American made. AS you know I used to bump the Eden WT 550 with the 410 and 115, but I wasn't pleased with the overall tone. It actually had my Smith sounding a bit flat. But in all fairness Eden rigs are tight.

When I was switching from my Peavey rig, I almost purchased an Ampeg SVT3 Pro and the 410HLF cab until I tasted the eden. The eden sounded better to me, and I have more headroom than the ampeg head. I was dissappointed with how that cab sounded with the head. I originally heard the hlf cab powered by an eden, which sounded sweet, but I don't like to mismatch my equipment. That's personal preference.

I've owned an ampeg rig for about 6 years and I've never been disappointed with anything about the cab or head. I've played fairly large venues (3 to 400 people) and i am always heard clearly and even told to turn down. I also wouldn't but any of ampegs products not made in america. The quality isn't the same.
I must fight with my praise.

Ampeg anyone??? I'm all Ampeg
I love me Ampeg SVT-6 Pro pro head and
PR-410HLF cabinet

This big boi weighs 128lbs...

I also have an Ampeg SVT-Pro Preamp
The smaller cabinet 410-hlf only weighs about 65lbs.  It's not ported though...I'm perplexed still...

It's takes space for the tubes, but you can't beat the tone and a little wood for quality sound in cabinets.

Actually this isn't a true statement any more.  20 years ago this would be spot on.  However now, this is propaganda that the US gov. wants you to believe.  It's scare tactics.  The fact is a circuit board is soldered the same whether it's here or in Korea.  When they were making them in America they did it the same way.  The costs aren't cut by changing the parts or production of those parts. It's cut by moving the factory (as is) to korea so now instead of the light bill being $50K for the month it's $15K.
My SVT-6Pro head (made in Korea I believe) was shipped as a replacement for a US made head that was crap...and it's viscously nasty...
If you removed the "made in" sticker from the back you wouldn't know the difference...

I use an SVT-4 PRO which gets the job done no matter which bass I use with it.Even when playing larger events and going to the PA board, I'll still use the Ampeg setup as a stage monitor. I will admit there are rare times when I don't feel like lugging heavy equipment; then I use my Sansamp tech 21 with Ampeg simulation through the house system.

i guess like ddwilkins said, ampeg didnt have the headroom  or clearer tone i needed. im not an agressive player so  i need a little headroom to compensate....

Each setup has its own sound. For me, Eden proved itself when I did an outside gig last summer. At the gig, all I had was what you see in my avatar. I had PA support, but turned my DI off so that I could test this baby out. I was going up against an electric drumset, guitar, 2 keyboards, organ and vocals. I was never lost in the mix and I didn't have my volume or gain past 12 o'clock. The only problem was that I kept tripping the generator ;D. Imagine what I would sound like if I had 2 cabs. ?/?

Since 2004, I've been playing an Ampeg BA115HP 220 Watt. I have not had ANY problems at all. I am wanting a punchier sound like of a 2x10 or 4x10, but as we all know; these rigs & gear are high!!!
