I was thinking about getting the church essentials. Do you think it will help if I suck at progressions on the play by ear? I understand the number system but i cant remember the chords to go with his bass. Will the essentials be okay to look at from where I stand now?

I strongly suggest you go here:

'Favorite' that link and soak up everything before you buy a DVD (or any other DVD).  Even if you bought the DVD now you wouldn't get a lot out of it until you learn the basics.

How do you play by ear and not know what chords go with what bass notes?   ?/?

In GK202 Jermaine tells you what chords go with the 1, what chords go with the 2, etc, etc.

Maybe taking those examples and applying them in every key will help.

In any event this link should be very helpful:
