« on: November 25, 2008, 04:07:56 PM »
Which would you prefer to play I think I know most of everybody's answer but just incase Im wrong which is your choice? Also what would be your easiest way of purchasing one of these boards.

If you have a good midi controller, you could go with the rack versions and buy both.

me personally id go with the Roland Fantom. only because ive never been a fan of the motif. I will admit it is an awesome board, and the sounds are off the chain but it still doesnt live up to the hype that everyone talks it up to be. its one of those things where since the professionals use it, ameteurs...automatically believe its the best. roland fantom is a better board all around from the sounds, to the features, and learning curve..........then it all goes back to personal preference as well
Keys, bass, drums, trombone, I sing a lil bit too lol

played the new Fantom and didn't really care for organ sounds,M3 has some good sounds but didn't like the key feel;guess a controller would help that. The motif is still my choice-that and $1.50 gets a small de-caf ha ha

i have both of them i can give you my insight on both of them they both have great quality sounds i think the motif is a better performance board than the fantom x mainly because of the sliders, the fantom has the assignable pads which is cool, i think the motif is more user friendly but this is my 1st roland too, thr roland sequencer and sampler for the most part is better the the motif, too keep it real all but the organ sounds on the fantom are excellent and the motif, the acoutic sounds are the best out there the piano, keys, organ, guitar, bass, woodwind, horn. If you are not a true piano player you would be satisfied with the fantom over the motif

Its all preference.  Motif has excellent strings, guitar and acoustic sounds. The vintage 74' is one of the best rhodes I've heard.  But the Phantom has super thick synth , bass and electric sounds.  I never liked Motif's organs, they suck to ME.  To my knowledge Roland has an excellent piano, one that is standard in alot of gospel recordings past and present.

You're right about it being all about preference.  I do like the vintage 74 probably not the best rhodes I've heard but very usable sound.  The best I've heard was the rhodes from Roland's Keyboards of the 60s,70s, and 80s JV expansion card.

It depends on what size you're getting and what you're using it for.  I never even consider organ sounds when it comes to a keyboard.  If you're buying an 88-key, you're probably gonna be playing lead keys.  So I'd look at the feel, piano sounds, ep's/rhodes and strings/pads.  If I'm getting a smaller version, I'm probably playing secondary/auxillary keys so I'd look at my synth sounds and such.

I'd get a Motif if I'm playing lead keys and I'd get a Fantom if playing 2nd keys.

I'm mad that yamaha just now decided to put knobs on the Motif XS rack.  I want the Classic rack, but I wouldn't like not being able to control my piano&strings patch.

When I used to play out with my M-audio Radium61, the knobs worked well with the Mo Rack.

Man, that's exactly what I needed to hear.  I'm considering selling my Motif classic and getting a Motif Rack.  But I use the piano&strings patch a lot and I like to bring the strings level up and down.  I didn't know if that was possible on the rack version.
