Favorite Drummer=Better Drummer?
« on: December 07, 2008, 03:27:35 PM »
I've been playing set a little over 2 years, but I don't feel like I've progressed much. I'm thinking it has a lot do with the fact that there's no one in particular I call my "favorite". So, my question to my fellow LGMers is- how important is it to have a favorite drummer as it pertains to growth/development behind the kit?

I don't know how important it is to have a favorite drummer per se, But it is vital to listen to other drummers and observe how they interact with the music. More than likely the drummeres you listen to the most will be the ones that you like the most or the ones who play the music you like. I'd dare to say that listening to music and the role your instrument plays in it is the most important thing any musician can do to grow.

Maybe you're not putting yourself in situations where you can grow musically?

I don't think having a favorite drummer has anything to do with it other than inspiration, but inspiration alone doesn't make you a better drummer. When I find myself in a stand still status musically, I just simply try something new. I try practice and listen to new things or things that I might be afraid of or might seem difficult. There is so much music out there and there are so many styles that you will eventually hear something new that you want to learn. Try to listen to albums featuring different lead instruments too.

Stay prayed up and just keep your ears open. Vinnie is my favorite drummer, but I can honestly say I haven't listened to him much in the last few months because I've been shedding to Keith Jarrett on piano and listening to Eddie Browns approach on organ. It's good to listen to many different approaches from various instruments to get a full grasp of music. You can actually feed off of what another musician on another instrument is playing.

God bless

Along with the other responses...you hav to remember that there aren't alot of peope who take this instrument by storm in 2 years. Be patient with yourself and give yourself a chance to mature and grow. Even the oldest and most experienced of players are still learning till this very day. Also, be honest with yourself and find the things that bother you about your playing and FOCUS on those in practice time. A man can't conquer what he won't confront! Lastly, use the resources that are avaiable to you. YOUTUBE is a huge tool for learning. Take advantage of it! Keep coming to the LGM Drum room. Peace.
Love God. Live Long.

Thank you all so much for the helpful responses. All of you hit on so many great points.

I think the last two responses really hit home with my situation-my fear of taking on new challenges. I guess that's just a personal problem I have to deal with. :-\
