I think that busy musicians possibly are the ones that just haven't had many opportunities to play with other musicians. They sometimes are used to being the "whole band" and have little concept of team playing, because it IS two entirely different things.
That being said, as a primary keyboardist, but also a bassist(secondary) and a drummer(when asked), I tend to be very mindful of the musicians around me because we do have to work together. As a bassist especially, I cannot stand to have a busy keyboardist, who TAKES OVER my role on the bottom end, and there are times I will just put my bass down, and let them have the whole thing. I don't know, maybe I just think differently because I do play other instruments as well. I have a "Band sound" mindset.

Good points.

I started playing the drums, but when I moved to the Organ & keys it really opened my eyes to how bad it sounds when the drummer is all over the place.

I think having that perspective of playing different instruments really makes you better in a group.

I totally understand where you're coming from, but in my area(NJ/NY)there are so many gifted musicians and a lot of them as myself play in a band setting and have played for major artists.  Some, not all, still tend to want to shine and show off.  Now let me say when they get a gig with an artist, then all the fancy stuff tones down, because a big check is involved. But when they happen to be in a regular church setting or concert, then the craziness starts.

My 2 cents...
I agree with pretty much everything that's been said. I think the biggest problem is sometimes there isn't any instruction for a lot of musicians in church. Some musicians really just find their way and like someone said earlier they learn a lot of licks and cool tricks and can't wait to try them out and to some it sounds busy. I think we fall short though if we don't at least try to raise the "busy" musician's awareness to his playing. Meaning, if you stop playing with someone, I think its unfair if you don't tell them why. I'm a huge advocate of communication because you never know someone's heart or their musical/spiritual maturity...I remember when I first started, like a lot of people, I was kicked off organs/keyboards/pianos and a lot of times no one ever told me why and I would actually know the song and could play. I think we owe a duty to other musicians to tell them what they are doing wrong and how their ministry may or may not be effective when we see error...
Also, a lot of times, I think musician's that become tasteful were probably busy at some point in time because they may still be "honing their sound" and then as they matured, as was said earlier, they then become more tasteful. I guess what I'm saying is a busy musician isn't always trying to show off...but may be trying to find themselves musically...

I hate when "amateur" keyboardists learn runs (like the blues scale) and keep playing it over and over every 3 seconds-- It sounds so bad and so annoying.

But then on the other hand, I hate when the really good musicians twist a song beyond recognition by adding so many chords and runs!! Ironically, it really takes away from what you're doing, when you keep adding stuff... If you're gonna do runs and add chords, sprinkle them in there every now and then....
