122 relay
« on: December 04, 2008, 03:57:44 PM »
Anybody experienced with replacing 122 relay with the solid state ones? My relay is acting up-stays on fast a lot,so it's take it out,hit it with wd 40 or contact cleaner or replace.Heard the solid state is way to go.

I did this once.  Not very hard. You may have to change a few wires around but the new relay will tell you what to do.

Are we talking about relays specifically designed for Leslies? If so, I highly recommend Speakeasy's universal solid state relay. It's $100 but it's a completely silent relay and works for both 122 and 147 applications. You wire it exactly as you would a traditional mechanical relay. Well worth the price for a reliable SS relay. Here's a pic I took last year of it installed in a 122 amp.

Yes,eventually leslie relays need a little TLC;does it require any mods ,drilling any holes etc. for a stock 122?

I bought a replacement from Goff Prof.  Did not require any drilling but I did have to switch some wiring around.  The instructions were good.  The only issue was the fact that someone had previously replaced the original relay with a newer mechanical relay and they did a bang up job.  Other than that, it was not difficult at all.

No mods at all, wired exactly like the original. Everything you need is included with the relay. Here's where you can purchase it.

And a copy of the manual (one is included with the relay as well)

I suppose you incorrectly wire the relay by connecting ground to a hot lead. The instructions are pretty clear about where each wire goes so it'd be pretty hard to mess up.
