Yeah that was a tight performance. The original song is tight so they really couldn't do anything but play the song. that is an old Bill Withers tune called Use Me I think. James Gadson play the drums on that joint.

Yes sir, Teddy did the song real justice.
It's called knowing the music, respecting and serving the song. The purpose of fills are to set up transitions and accent parts of emphasis in a song which is what he did. The song itself is written around the drum groove which is a complicated pattern to make feel good. The drummer on this track, James Gadsen, is a vocal and song writer himself so there is a real sensibilty of accompaniment to the drums.
