That's why I carry my laptop and midi/usb cables everywhere.

LOL...I need to be like that, because sometimes I get surprised with one of those Casio WK keyboards--some of them even have lighted keys! :o :o

Taking a laptop is a lot easier than taking a keyboard! You can play on any piece of trash then...the only thing you may miss is your control interface.

Who actually uses the sampler on their motif?

Of my friends that sequence, most of them use software (e.g. Reason, Cakewalk, etc...).  Proponents of on-board samplers support the fact that you can sequence wherever your keyboard is.  But as far as portability, you can't beat a mac laptop and a lightweight controller if you had to work on the road.  I've made a drum track on the bus on the way to a gig just using my Reason 4.0's redrum drum computer and some headphones.

As far as mixing/faders...that would be a big concern of mine.  That's the main reason I haven't yet sold my motif 7 and gotten a motif rack.  But themidiroom told me that you can control different patch parameters in a rack using the sliders/knobs on a midi controller.

I dont use a sampler at all
but as far as the fader piece

I am debating between the motif xs and the roland rd 700gx
I am leaning toward the roland because
I dont need the sequencer

but as far as a master controller controlling parameters

I would rather just have it on the board I am playing

in other words I would rather have the motif board and move the faders right there
then to have a rack that I am controlling

To be or not to be that is the question you anwer when you pray practice and read your word

Sometimes, the controller can give you more interfaces than the actual board. My KME supports zones, but only has the main volume slider, if I plug it into my Keystation 88, I can control the volume for all the zones independently.

I had my motif rack with me but we had less than 30 seconds to be ready to play.  The Korg was cheesy, but I played it.

I never go to play somewhere empty handed unless I know for a fact what's there.

What about the S90 ES.  I'm looking at getting it.  Is that just as good performance-wise?

I have the S90ES.  I love it.  The RD-700 is easier to layer four sounds with the sliders.  You have to do too much with the S90ES.  But I like the S90's sounds better and the feel was a bit more to my liking.  But the price hasn't gone down on it yet.  I'd definitely recommend the RD-700 to a church though.  It's easier to navigate.  The S90 always turns on to a performance.  I think the RD-700 comes on to whatever sound was played last.

I think you can change it so that it will start in voice mode. DD posted instuction a whike back. what i did was overwrote the initial performance with one that I created, so it starts on that and I have my layers already setup there, and then I used the adjacent ones for different performances. But the polyphony sucks on the mo6, so I usually stay in voice mode

That's what I did.  I changed up "wide river" to be full grand, hard vintage, hard ens and something else.
