Somebody help me understand this...
« on: December 24, 2008, 08:47:45 AM »
I just saw a shout clip with an organist, pianist, 2 bass players and 3 drummers.... ?/? ?/? ?/?

Why on earth would you need 3 drummers!!??  I think I can understand 2 bass players (one for the line and another solo) but 3 drummers is overkill.

Am I wrong for thinking that!!??  ?/?

I don't even get two drummers. Why on earth have 2 drummers? What are they going to be doing? I can get down with 2 bassists. This just looks like a recipe for chaos.

Then again i suppose what they want is two or 3 different drumlines going at the same time.  ?/? ?/?

This is Bad..Bad..Bad. I do not see where anyone is learning anything here.
Looks more like a Gospel Jamboree to me. Everyone is going at it at one time. It sounds like chaos but some folks will say that they are cooking. That's as bad as a person saying that a bass and a guitar are the same instruments (4 vs 6 strings) and a "guitar player" and a "lead guitar player" can not be the same.
It would have been nice for each person to take turns playing in this gospel jam session. This would allow the kids to key off the other's style with their own style. Like James Brown would say "givedadrummersome..." :o)

I'm impressed. They all kept pretty good time throughout.
I'd jam with them IF I have a couple of 4x12 cabinets and a few hundred watts to power them.  ;D

In my opinion for shouting/ praise music, the more musicians (drummers) the better.  :)

Psalm 150
1Praise ye the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary: praise him in the firmament of his power.
2Praise him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent greatness.
3Praise him with the sound of the trumpet: praise him with the psaltery and harp.
4Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs.
5Praise him upon the loud cymbals: praise him upon the high sounding cymbals.
6Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD. Praise ye the LORD.
Have you been baptized in Jesus' name and received the Holy Ghost?
(Acts 2:37,38 and 19:1-7)

That is what invariably happens. Dudes are trying hard to be heard.

They are playing after service; I don't think they would use 3 drummers for a song

One question i have is why they have 3 drum sets in the first place. Drum sets are a pain to set up.

this is a shed . not a service, a bunch of musicians get together and just jam .every musician that comes gets a chance to play sometimes there larger than this . its not a bad thing to have young people in church rather than the club late on a saturday night . but thats just my opinion  :) ;)

I haven't had a chance to listen yet, but in regards to the drums; I never understood the 2 drummer thing either, but if you really listen to what's going in in an Allman Bros song (for instance), there are a lot of little things going on that can't be covered with just one dude. Well, on top of that, there's also a percussionist.  :o

It can really fill out the sound, but then again that's just one more dude packed in the van...  ;)

Yep, it's a shed, and I ain't mad at 'em.  From what I have heard some churches have multitudes of young drummers sittin' on the edge of their seats, sticks in hand waiting for the chance to play.  This is way for some of the young bucks to try out their antlers.

I saw an interview with Fred's bassist 'Snoop' Evans where he said he picked up bass because he was like one of about 20 drummers in his church.

I tell most young aspiring guitarists that if they REALLY want to get a gig for life, pick up the bass.
There are not enough good bass players around...too dang many guitarists, imho...and a solid bass player is much appreciated.

Funny enough in my church we have more bassists and drummers than guitarists. There is only one guitarist...me. :)
