What do ya'll think about this bass?
« on: December 28, 2008, 03:10:54 PM »
Gents -

This is a bass that has been kicking around the fringes of my collection for over 9 months and I never did anything with it. Recently, I decided to try and turn it into something a little different/special. I think I've succeded but I want some other opinions.

It started as an MTD Kingston Artist. From there I added an Nordstrand 5.2 and a USA Bartolini 3-band premp -- with a passive rolloff. This thing now sounds HUGE. Ultimately, it has that mid-rangey Music-Man vibe but with the ability to do some interesting tone-shaping.

Cosmetically, I had a clear pickguard made and then I put my Photoshop skills to work. The logo you see is actually on a piece of paper under the pickguard but I think it's a pretty good match.

I'm at a minor crossroads here. On the one hand, the MM vibe is not really my go-to sound -- I prefer J-Basses. On the other hand, I already have 3 other basses that provide my "Meat & potatoes" tone in several different variations. I'm really considering keeping this one - just as a little "Cayenne pepper" to go with the meat & potatoes.

Anyone have thoughts/opinions here?

That is actually very nice and extremely creative.  Your electronics upgrade sounds pretty nice to me.  That bass is a conversation piece on looks alone.  Keep on working with the Kingston and I'm sure you can find a sound in there that's workable.  But seriously, I'm digging that logo.  Looks very professional and makes that bass one-of-a-kind.

Very nice.  I would definately carry it when the church is visiting another church (as long as we're wearing the robes of course)

Thanks for the love everybody -- I knew I had something potentially special but I didn't expect that everybody would be feeling it so much!

I spent a lot of time last night playing it and tweaking the tone -- there is a lot happening here! I have rehearsal tomorrow night and that will really tell the tale but my gut says that this one is a keeper.

If you get rid of that bass, we will hunt you down and take turns doing drop kicks on you.

OK that is VERY hot. I don't play bass but i'd like to do what you did to the pickguard(?). How did you do that design? Was it painted on or what?

I took the bass to rehearsal tonight and it flat-out killed!

The mid-range humbucker tone was there but the onboard pre gave me the ability to dial in as much bottom as I needed and (more than) enough top end as well. The added bonus is that the passive rolloff works in both active and passive modes so I was able to tweak the tone to dial out any harshness.

From low-end thunder to high-end sheen, this bass smokes -- she's a keeper!

Awesome bass man!  I had a Kingston 5 and thought about adding a 5.2 as well but ultimately sold the bass in favor of another MTD....FWIW, yours is definitely a keeper with those mods!

Be Blessed,
J

Do you remember which 5.2 pickup is a direct fit?  They have 3 listed on their website (Lakland, OLP and Music Man).  I may be buying an Artist soon and, if so, I want to upgrade it.
