Woohoo!
« on: January 04, 2009, 01:30:10 PM »
Im officially in three forums on LGM. My primary instrument (a-la Church) is the Keyboard.

Last year i bought, learned and can now play the bass. i even had to play on the 31st just gone. My cousin who plays normally was a little occupied with a play. And its not that I'm in a rush or anything of the sort...but i now have myself a sleek electric/-acoustic guitar. i been trying to digest the bulk of info on this forum and youtube videos as well as www.8notes.com. I'm really enjoying the challenge of a new instrument. (If you've never tried it, i recommend it...it revitalizes how you view the ones you already CAN play)

Anyway, I just wanted to let you guys know i was on this board too. And in the same fret also that I'll be asking questions from time to time. Like strumming, is a bit of a thing. Hurt my thumb(nail) severally already...but I'm not deterred one bit. baby steps right? ;)

Well congratulations man. The guitar is just great man. I play guitar in my church and today i thought i saw a lady bat her eyelids at me. I can't confirm that though.

Throw any questions you have on here. It'll be fun to answer.

What happened to his marriage? Lets remember Prince lays down all the tracks in the studio. He gets his attention for singing

Yep. singing is bound to drown any instrument made by man.

A serious question guys...im learning on a steel string electric acoustic, how do you strum right? The strings catch my thumbnail and its hurting really bad. im learning with a pick too, but i wanna get how to finger-style too.

Ooooh, thats a toughie. For my strumming hand, I cut the nail off of the thumb and leave my other 4 fingers longer so that I get good sound with I fingerpick. I like the way the fleshy thumb gives the bass string picking a softer/fuller sound.

When i strum i do not use my thumb. It gets very tiring after a while and it does hurt. I just had to take the plunge and learn how to use a pick. I suggest you get a very light .5mm pick or less for strummy stuff.

So there isn't any effective approved way to combat the defective nail-catch strumming? :-\

No matter, i like using a pick anyhow. I can play quite a few chords already. scales are easier to get down, its just more strings than the bass. some of the shapes and positions are a real finger stretcher though. Like Positions 4 & 5 are a real pain for now. The regular barre F chord and the barre D chord ( i think position 2/3) are taking some getting used to as well. On the whole though, i think i'm going to love playing the guitar.

I'm trying to visualize how you're holding your thumb in order to catch your nail.

Even without a pick, I never really have an issue with this.

If the meat of your thumb isn't more prominent than your nail, then I'd be trimmin' those nails  :)

Fixed now... I'll let you know if they get bruised further.
