Need Help with "No Joy No Strength"
« on: February 23, 2009, 05:02:25 PM »
Hello, I'm a newbie to the site. I would like to know if anyone has help suggestions in learning No Joy No Strength by James Hall. I'm trying to learn it but I'm not used to playing as fast as on the song. Just trying to play the roots doesn't sound right. I tried to just play it using usual shout runs but I can't figure out what he's doing on the CD. Please help with suggestions. Thank you! P.S. I have to figure it out by the 17th for a district meeting so I Need HelP!!!

Welcome to LGM!!!

I don't know what song you're speaking of, but the best thing to do is learn the progression first.  Don't worry about licks until you know how the song turns around.  Then you can work on filling it in after that.
Somebody put me in the key of E#

I know the song, but haven't sat down to learn it. From what I've heard, if you struggle with regular shout runs, this song will be little difficult to learn. But, don't get discourage, keep at it and I'm sure you'll learn it. It takes patience.
Keep God first and he'll do the rest!!!

I noticed 3 things that sort of conflict in this paragraph:

1) A fast song by James Hall (Same as Ricky Dillard).

2) Not used to playing fast...

3) Figure it out by the 17th...of what?  March??

Well, I guess that's possible.  The best I can suggest is to get used to doing a lot of shout-like runs and start moving them around according to the progression as Jeremyr suggested.

I actually had to learn this song when i was a baby bassist. The organ player just gave me all the notes. I cant believe i forgot most of it, but i think a rule of thumb is to try to hear out the notes the seems to be stressed and determine whether the notes get deeper or higher and try to use half steps. This works with most shout music type songs. Hear out the progression and apply halfsteps and usually you'll figure it out. As far as finger speed get a metronome and start slow and speed it up every time you get good at a certain speed. Its not as hard as it seems. If I get free time i may be able to help later.
you got to hear numbers

song is in Ab

(2) (3) (4)
Bb - C - C#   No Joyyyyy

(b6) (7) (6)  No Strength
E  - G - F
that part i need my bass to check if it isnt right, try D(b5) - F(6) - Eb(5)

You wonder how we do it, how we can go through it
(basically a type of walk around the 4 which is C#)
F-F#-G-Ab
F-F#-G-Ab
Bb-B-C-C#
Bb-B-C-C#

Its Joyyyyy, its Joyyyyyy
(basic shout walk on the 1 (Ab)
C-C#-D-Eb
F-F#-G-Ab

The joy of the Lord...is my strength
(that double walk over Ab)
C-C#-D-Eb
C-C#-D-Eb
F-F#-G-Ab
F-F#-G-Ab

the joy of the lord, the joy of the lord is my strength
(regular walk over Ab use some octaves)
C-C#-D-Eb
F-F#-G-Ab

(6)-(b6)-(5)-(b5)
F - E - Eb - D   Leap for it
F - E - Eb - D   Clap for it
F - E - Eb - D   Sing for it
F - E - Eb - D   Dance for it

you may alternate and walk up to the 5 (Eb)
(3)-(4)-(b5)-(5)
C - C# - D - Eb   Leap for it
C - C# - D - Eb   Clap for it
C - C# - D - Eb   Sing for it
C - C# - D - Eb   Dance for it

That should be a guideline. feel free to correct any errors. that way i'll play it better when i play it at my church. lol.

floaded did wayyyyyy bettter than i would have. I was just gonna give you the numbers in relation to the key of the song. He gave you both. Focus on memorizing the numbers though because they will help you learn other songs that may use similar progressions and run but may be in a different key or with this song if the group you are with decide to sing in a different key.
you got to hear numbers

CORRECTIONS:

You wonder how we do it, how we can go through it
(basically a type of walk around the 5 which is Eb) not C#
G-Ab-A-Bb
G-Ab-A-Bb
C-C#-D-Eb
C-C#-D-Eb

Its Joyyyyy, its Joyyyyyy
(basic shout walk on the 4 (C#) not Ab
F-F#-G-Ab
Bb-B-C-C#

Thats what keeps me strong
                     B(b3)
All the day long
(1)-(2)-(b3)-(3)-(6)
Ab - Bb - B - C - F

The joy of the Lord...is my strength
(that double walk over C# not Ab)
F-F#-G-Ab
F-F#-G-Ab
Bb-B-C-C#
Bb-B-C-C#

now i can play the song right. lol
