You are all aware that most of these techniques are entirely useless right? LOL
I have to disagree. Ok, they are not always used in every day music but personally Ive learned to relax a lot more when I play by learning these techniques. Plus the push/pull type one handed roll is just an extension of the technique used to play double stroke rolls which is a basic rudiment and part of most music. Also, check how Chris Dave plays the quick hi hat patterns, its kinda similar.
Ive always been a fan of my teacher's "learn it all" approach. Whether its a trick, technique or groove, you have to try it all out to know what makes you unique as a drummer.
I do hear what your saying though, there is an order to these things. Not always a good idea to learn one handed rolls etc before you have learned and perfected the basics.
