Playing by Ear
« on: January 13, 2009, 05:21:47 PM »
Hello Everyone, ?/?
Thanks for all of the chord help that's been provided here. It has given me a great start. I pretty much know most of the chords and how to play. My problem is simply listening to a sound and applying chords to what I hear. Is there a rule normally used when playing by ear on what notes should follow others. I have watched a many piano players and it seems once they know which key to play a certain sound they pretty much can play the song rather they're familiar with it or not. I guess my question is, once I find the key and starting chord, how do I know where to go from there? Thanks for any help...

Part of it has to do with learning how to play through changes/common progressions.  Once you learn how to flow through a 3-6-2-5-1 (for instance) in every key, when you hear that progression you don't have to think much about what notes to play.  Then you can focus on feel, tempo, placement....etc.

A 2-5-1 is a 2-5-1 regardless of what song it is being played in.  Of course, different styles of music have different "important" notes.  The first thing I would suggest is to learn to hear common progressions. Then learn how to play through them (in as many different ways/styles as you can).
