I'm a traitor... Relic sacrilege inside...
« on: January 19, 2009, 04:35:47 PM »
So, I killed some time at GC today since I was let out of work early.

Two things that I need to point out from this trip.

1: the Fender Super Sonic is a KILLER amp. I've never bothered to play one before, but that thing is a versatile piece of machinery. Pricey, I think, but worth it.

2: I fell for it... I picked up a relic Tele... I'll be the first to admit that I kinda like the look, but I agree that you lose mojo when it's fabricated that way.

BUT! this was the nicest playing and nicest sounding Tele I have picked up in a looooong time. OMGoodness, I wanted to just bolt for the door with it under my arm.

Oh, and it was that Butterscoth-y yellow/blonde, and that's the color I've always wanted (due mostly to me as a 14 year old looking up to Tom Petty lol).

However, with a nice Am. Std in my basement already, I think I'd rather spend the money and get some fret work and set up on my own Tele that drop $989 that I don't have on a new (new?) one. (maybe even paint it???)

Mine has the newer slim C-shaped neck, though (which I love), but this thing had something closer to an LP or my Wolf. It was chunky, but not obstructively so. Oh, and a nice thumb slap on that low E just JUMPED out of the amp. Even on the neck pickup.

Playing that reminded me why I was a die-hard Tele guy for so long... and I guess I still am.

Although... I did play a very nice worn cherry LP Studio as well. Not the beat up ones, just the one that's satin all over.

I guess I'm just tired of shiny stuff lol.

Ah... I was looking forward to the guitar store, and now I'm just lamenting in the wallows of GAS.  :-\

Sorry for the novel lol. Carry on.

coincidentally, just got exposed to the Fender Super Sonic Sunday. we played a concert, and before we opened, a young 16 yr old guitarist named Will Tucker did a couple of tunes (Thrill is Gone and Stormy Monday) and we backed him. he was pretty good, only been playin 2 years and knew 85% of the standard blues licks.

anyway, he played through the Super Sonic, head and cabinet, man that thing put my lil distortion pedal to shame. I wanted to interject some licks here n there, but when i heard him... was like no way, stick to clean backing chords, lol.

thing is powerful and supposedly a combo of the Vibrolux and Bassman. wouldnt mind playing with it some.

Our church picked up a SuperSonic for the practice room...very nice. I still bring my own VHT amp because I know it too well, but I could easily get the job done with that Fender SuperSonic.

Consider a PLEK fret job and a good bone nut replacement someday. I'm not prone to the latest and greatest hocus-pocus hyped guitar things, BUT...the PLEK is da bomb.
I'm gotten several refrets w. PLEK setup ib Baltimore and I couldn't be happier.

The PLEK is still just a tool...so a good luthier is still a requirement to run it and do finish up work.

I can't say I'm familiar with what that even is lol. I guess I'm going to have to go hit up Google...
