Blues to Jazz
« on: February 04, 2009, 06:36:42 AM »
I play quartet which to me is predominately bluesy type music, but the group i play for has a different flavor to it a little more jazzy. so does anyone no how to transition basic blues chords to more of a jazz feel. if so could you explain. ;D

You could do little things, like turning triads into sevenths and adding some chromaticism.
Remember not to go overboard, as it isn't straight jazz.
Also listen to some guitar players, who have done just what you are looking for- guys like J. Dubose, and this man:

Spanky Alford arguably the best quartet player ever.
He played jazz and blues/quartet style with equal aplomb!

yeah, you'll have to learn more than basic triads...7ths, altered dominants, that type of thing. of course if you are in a big band...you can make it a little more simple.
