i definitely will share what little i know, but i tend to lean toward helping only dedicated and like minded bass players.  years ago i encouraged and taught a young man, and today from what i can tell, he plays mostly R & B, i kind of feel guilty whenever i think about it.

I enjoy sharing anything I know (even the little that it is).

Although, it is irritating when people want you to baby them through everything.  Please do your own homework, too.

When people ask me if I teach lessons, I say no, but I'll mentor them.  That means you can watch me, then do your homework and I'll show you what anything and everything I know along the way.

I don't mind showing people what I know, but I have had issues with people showing me stuff.  For instance they'll show me something I already know and I can't say, "yeah I already know that" because (based on past experiences) it's offensive.  Still, it is annoying to me when I do something and someone goes "yeah I taught her that" and I'm thinking like, "erm...no".  But that's my ego.  :-\

I will share what I know but people who I see want it just to show off dont get much. Other than that I will help anyone.

Have no issue sharing what little I do know, but I do agree you need to put something in it as well.

I like exchanges of information and skill whenever possible. I will share something I know with you, and let you share something you know with me. But even those can be tricky.

I was watching a video of Victor Wooten and he said that he did not always teach others things he knew until they tried to figure some things out themselves, he said often what they found out was actually another way of doing things and then they even would teach him somethings and that way both sides learned something new. Bill "boodah" Dickens said the same thing about some of his students.
May God's Grace & Mercy smile upon you!

I've dealt with snobby musicians who smiled in my face but their time they wouldn't "waste". lol... I've also had the experience of learning from a couple of good friends of mine who went to the same highschool as me. I've learned a lot from them as well as reading a lot of theory articles, books, websites. Mainly books. I haven't had anyone try to learn from me, but hopefully I would respond in a loving and helpful manner, and do the best I can to explain whatever concept seemed to trouble the person.

I look at it this way........

The name of this site is LEARN Gospel Music. If somebody's gonna LEARN, somebody's gotta TEACH.  So I come with the mind set that I can and should do both.

Peace,

For instance they'll show me something I already know and I can't say, "yeah I already know that" because (based on past experiences) it's offensive.

sometimes you have to. u just gotta figure out a polite way to say it or show them that thats already in ur skill set. otherwise you'd have this one person running around swearing they taught every bass player the major scale or something like that.

I haven't had anyone try to learn from me, but hopefully I would respond in a loving and helpful manner, and do the best I can to explain whatever concept seemed to trouble the person.

you'd be surprised. you probably have already done so, but havent even realized it. someone one day might even say u were the one who showed them how to do this or that, and you'll be like "i did? when did that happen?"

For my God... let "Golden Axe" prevail.

;D ;D ;D ;D....Now, with all of the positive responses....(here it comes) ;D ;D ;D ;D....I started off playing drums, and decided to move to playing Bass Guitar...."My Dilema".... ?/?....I can only play Quartet Music.... :-\....how do I come to understand the progressions in congregational songs and songs that are sung by the church choir? We have no musicians....and I am trying to help out where I can...."PLEASE HELP"!

If you play quartet music...you're one step ahead because in quartet you know already know the all famous 1-4 or 1-4-5 (If you don't know your numbers...learn them!).  That's all congregational songs really are.

Check out "jeremyrbass" or "torch7" youtube page Music Theory (progressions) Pt. 1 and 2 and so on.  Most importantly practice to CDs or visit and play at some of the churches that sing a lot of congregational and choir type songs.  I hope this helps.

...and to answer the question that was asked at the beginning of this forum topic.  I would share in a heartbeat.  I'm lucky to play with a great musicians and the teach me ALOT...so anytime I can give share something I will.
