Sabian SR2 cymbals?
« on: March 08, 2009, 05:10:47 AM »
Hi there,

I`ve just found on youtube some videos of new Sabian SR2 cymbals and some of them are pretty nice.

There`s a decription I found on memphisdrumshop`s site:

The Sabian SR2 Series is a new concept for a cymbal series. These cymbals are recycled used/returned/refurbished products that Sabian received back through inventory swaps, etc, and has been factory refurbished. All of the cymbals are cast product, but there is no differentiation by series at all, so any cymbal could have started as an AA, AAX, HH, HHX, etc. The Sabian SR2 Series will only be designated by size and weight – For example the 16" SR2 cymbals will be labeled as 16” SR2 Thin, 16” SR2 Medium, or 16” SR2 Heavy. Beyond that, the sound and the price allows these exclusive cymbals to speak for themselves.

So that means you can get a HHX or HH or whatever cymbal at much than their actual price.
Check these 2 as examples:

Has andbody tried it yet? What do you think?

Very interesting...depending on the price and quality this could be a new start of some interesting trends..Sabian the economy pack, lets go green (sounds like an interesting slogan).  Stay Blessed, Nate J.

I'll order that 20" cymbal tomorrow and tell you guys what I think about it after I get it. From the hammering patterns and the sound of the bell, I'm sure its a HH or HHX model.

Interesting concept to these cymbals. I'd like to hear more but in person.

I just got the SR2 20" Medium cymbal and it is very nice. I'm almost sure it was a HHX Manhattan Ride due to the similar bell, hand-hammering and almost identical sound but they cleaned it up, the finish looks like they took a piece of steel wool to the entire cymbal..lol, lathed it a little deeper and it sounds great. I was needing a jazz type ride and this fits perfectly. It's crashable and the response that I get when I use my Peter Erskine Ride Sticks is incredible. I can see myself checking on what new ones they get in frequently from now on. Thanks for the info on these man!

Quote from: PeterS, who is from Sabian.
Hello.

Please allow me to talk about SR2.

The reason we have not formally announced anything on SR2 (until this post) is because at present we are running a small test market in the US. Our plan was to formally announce SR2 shortly after we had gathered all the feedback from the test market.

First off, I should mention that SR2 is NOT a new series from Sabian. The concept of SR2 is to take B20 cymbals that otherwise would not be put back into stock, and recondition and renew them in to a cymbal that can go back out into the market at a lower price point than new.

The cymbals we use for SR2 will include, but not be limited to, cymbals that we receive back from consignments, cymbals that Sabian artists have used on tour, trade shows and events around the world, or possibly even cymbals that have come through production with cosmetic or surface defects. These cymbals may now be re conditioned into SR2. All the cymbals that are used for SR2 will be B20 cast bronze.

The first thing you will notice about an SR2 cymbal is the look. We felt that it was very important for SR2 to have its own very unique look in order to clearly distinguish and SR2 from a mainstream Sabian. We want to be absolutely sure that the consumer is fully aware that they are purchasing a reconditioned cymbal, as opposed to a new one. That is also why it has its own logo.

We will also be handling the model designations within SR2 differently than we do with our regular lines. The cymbal will only show its size, and one of three weight categories - Thin, Medium or Heavy. Also, all SR2 within the same size will be the same price, whether or not it was an AA, HH, HHX, etc in its former life. Price will be based on size only.

It is important to understand that as mentioned before, SR2 is not a new series. We are obviously limited in the amount of cymbals that we will have available that can be reconditioned into an SR2. In fact, there will be times when SR2 will not be available. Obviously we will not be making cymbals to go into SR2.

As mentioned, we are in the middle of a test market on these as we speak, so please bear with us as SR2 evolves.

If anyone has any questions on SR2, please feel free to contact me directly at peters@sabian.com or leave a post here. I will check back from time to time to try to answer any questions.

Let me add that Memphis Drum Shop is currently THE ONLY shop in the world carrying these cymbals.

I smacked and examined several of them last Friday and they are beautiful and sound great!!!!! i am definitely about to expand my collection of Sabian pies!
