Returning to Organ
« on: March 31, 2009, 07:13:50 AM »
Hello-

After taking a 3 year hiatus from playing the organ, I have been offered to play at a church backing up the minister of music. I am fluent in probably half of the keys, am practicing the rest. Do you have any tips on how to get myself ready to get back out there? I have a korg triton that I use for home practice and am watching some youtube vids on organ chords, and such, but is there anything else I should be doing?
Thanks!

There are some excellent Instructional DVD's out there.

But FIRST I'd say: Learn every key.  The worst thing that can happen is to be sitting behind the Organ and somebody gets up to sing and starts singing in a key you're not familiar with.

What kind of music do they play?  Ask the MOM what songs you'll definitely need to know.  Don't let him stop you at 1 or 2.  Ask for at LEAST 10.  I'd want 20, but at LEAST 10 songs that the church does a lot.  Learn those songs in every key.

Ask what key the musicians like to shout in so you can practice that on your own.

Some DVD's I think would help:

thanks for the tips! I am currently practicing in the keys I am not familiar with (A natural, B nat, D nat, E nat). The music is baptist/pentecostal style, with lots of shouting. For right now I can fake the funk in the keys I am not comfortable in, but I'd like to sound as proficient in A natural as I am in A Flat.
I will check out these sites, as well/
Thanks again!
God Bless.

Yes, indeed! I felt the annointing as soon as I walked in the church doors and felt it all throughout service.
