Fantom Users or Anyone Who Has Played On A Grand
« on: April 01, 2009, 07:15:32 PM »
On the fantom you have piano mode, which allow you to raise and lower the lid, so my question is on a grand how open would have the lid to produce a good sound?

I like it open half way or mostly closed, but I think its a matter of personal taste, as I like darker sounding piaons

To produce a good sound, you need it open at least a little bit.  You don't want that muffled piano sound. I like mines open all the way, but half-way is fine as well.

Definitely half opened. When the piano is half opened it has a very smooth sound...not too bright and not too muffled.

Meh never played on a full grand(I think i used a 10'?) but i only used the smallest prop(i guess this is considered halfway?) I really liked the way it sounded.

Doesn't it depend on the location of the mics?  I mic the piano at church with the mics inside so it tends to work better with the lid closed.

Anybody notice that the Roland Fantom family of keyboard pianos,(acoustic) have a kind of mid-rangy "honk" in the sound that is really difficult to tune out? Not a really unpleasant sound but one that I attribute to the nature of the Roland beast. Sounds like the piano is hoarse. I keep my piano half way open. It sounds better to me that way.

I think part of that has to do with the type of pianos they sample from to create their sounds.  Roland has a new digital piano out that doesn't use samples at all.  The demo sounds really good.  It is very expensive however.

What's the name of the new Roland?

Yeah you might want to get a mixer stand before you go out and buy a V-piano   ::)
