At what point do you consider yourself a misician?
« on: January 23, 2005, 02:22:04 AM »
In the few years that I have been teaching myself to play, I've gone through alot of frustration. There were times when I wanted to give up on the bass, but something would not let me do it. I stuggled for a long time and still at times get down on myself. But now, that I've decided that this is what I want to do, I can see growth each time I practice and play at Church. I now have a few things under my belt and now I feel confident calling myself a musician. I just want to hear from some of yall what it took to get that point.
Be blessed and keep thumpin'.

Praise the Lord,

I'm fairly new to this and I've been doing a lot of looking around on the site and reading the different advices on the forum. I can understand what you are talking about because I can get frustrated every now and then. I played in high school starting in 10th grade only because my two other friends played the keyboard and drums and I just happened to have a bass at my house.  I didn't want to play it really, but as I kept playing I began to enjoy it. When I first went to college i stopped playing because I let the devil tell me I didn't have time. I know that the devil is a liar especially when God gives us a talent that we can use to minister to our brothers and sisters. I just picked it back up last year in the winter of my sophomore year. I've been getting better and the lord has been blessing me ever since. I'm glad that you are staying with it.

God Bless

People gave me that title before I gave it to myself. I think I didn't start using it until my 2nd year playing the organ. (I had been playing piano before, but not in church.)

The time came when i recieved calls from 7 differant bands in one week, asking I play bass for them. During the years I played secular metal, I never once thought of myself as a musician. I declined all offers to become totally committed to my church and ministry gig. The drummer, keyboardist and the minister of music here call me a musician. They are God's ordained or are deacons, with whom I joyfully labor for our Lord, so that's good enough for me.

I considered myself a musician once I realized (accepted) God had given me a gift.  Don't worry about what everybody else says about you.  Take your gift and develop it (with the help of the Lord).  There are many levels of musicianship; any humble musicians will admit there is always room to grow.  God bless,
