Be nice folks.  Perhaps if this church can't find anyone for they suggested pay, they will be willing to pay more; or maybe not.  You just never know.

That IS rather interesting. The question could be raised, are they expecting the musician to bounce from each instrument every service?  :-\

You know, maybe there's a typo. Maybe the OP actually meant $125 a week?

Yea. Heck if i were in that area i would LOVE to take that job on. I don't get paid in my current church and i play Wednesdays, Fridays and two services on Sunday.

I know how you feel, I currently play two services on a Sunday, Monday night rehearsal for our Church Choir, Tuesday night rehearsal for our Mens Choir then services on Wednesday and Saturday all for free. Getting paid any amount of money for me would be useful as this takes a lot of time and I could use the money for the massive amount of petrol I use going back and forth, but saying that I simply  love to play full stop.

Hey everybody, thanks for your replies, I hate it that so many people were offended by my post and the amount of money.  People are definitely worth their compensation, by that same token, we are just getting started (less than five years old).  As far as TV, that's hardly a major network, it's a local station.  We're not rolling in big money.

Everything we do is for souls.  I am the full time Pastor and my salary right now for me, my wife and my daughter is only $1000.00 a month.

I just thought someone might live close by, not playing right now and want to offer their time to Jesus and to the lost.

That money was simply all we could do right now as we get off the ground.

A workman is worthy of his hire but shame on those that are "hirelings" and will only play for Jesus if the amount is big enough, that's messed up.

That's also why the WORLD is full of musicians and the local church is hurting!

Maybe somebody for real will see this and hear our heart, we're just looking for help right now.

Oh, I also wanted to add, since someone was wondering, the grand belongs to a church member, the Hammond was donated and we made payments on the Phantom as we felt it was a good investment.

This year was the first year we have been able to offer musicians any money.  We just recently lost our piano player and was hoping someone else may feel like God was leading them this way.

As our church grows, the pay will also be able to grow, I'm just hoping somebody will help us out.

Pastor Edwards
P.S. We are also open to suggestions, we don't know what musicians usually make or how it all works we're just trying to figure it out and do what we are able to do.

Pastor Edwards,
I pray you find a musician who's not a hireling.
Don't be ashamed of the amount that you can offer if that's all you can do.
Either they'll take it or leave it, simple as that.

All the other negative comments aren't necessary.

Its a forum..people should be allowed to state how they feel whether negative or positive.

I'm not going to knock someone for thinking that the pay is too little...its all about how someone feels. I know preachers who don't even get paid $1000 a month because the church can't afford it....so to state that line, as if that means you're getting ripped...well, I could make comments toward that as I did.

Music ministry and preaching...they are all jobs. If God tell someone to preach, they have to do it regardless of if they are getting paid $1000 a month to $10,000 a month...and same with a musician.

No one should get offended or touchy about certain people's comments...we all state how we feel on this message board....ITS ALL GOOD  ;)
To KNOW me is to UNDERSTAND me, to UNDERSTAND me is to APPRECIATE me...

Yeah, I feel you on that. But the 1st response I read just sounded cold:
Umm,... $125 per MONTH?!

Good luck wit dat Pastor, cuz you're gonna need a miracle. :o

I agree. People are taking things way too personal recently. Things that arent even a big deal. Last week people were getting flamed for respectfully talking about people's styles. Isnt that what musicians do? ?/? With People getting offended over little stuff like this, its no wonder  church folks cant talk about real issues.

Who gets to make that determination?

Pastor Edwards have you asked anyone in your congregation if they play or know someone who plays? That is probably your best bet at this point. Get the word out to other churches in your area that you are looking for a musicianwho does not need or want to take too much money.

Pastor Edwards

what is an hireling? i sincerely hope at any time if your church (even now) makes cds or videos that your not selling them to gain capital for the church or even compensate for any income going out for anything else

i think its a shame that pastors charge to minister the gospel and call it a love offering and tell everyone how its hard to be a pastor and what it takes to run a ministry but as soon as a musician makes a financial stand he or she is crucified like they just love money and have no Jesus.

so the next time i hear about how much Jakes, Long, and others charge i should just consider them hirelings

the world is full of pastors and yet the local church is still hurting

I was cool wit the money amount i personally think you should take the money and invest it into one of your members (i.e. Lessons) instead of bringing in someone who is not apart of the vision, also make them follow strict guidelines while being invested into

This is a good suggestion, this is what we are doing, investing in members that show an interest in learning.

Cosign! I think it is an excellent suggestion too. Try and focus on your members and find out if any have the desire to learn to play an instrument. I would also continue praying for a musician who can come in and take active part in the church, i.e believes and follows the vision God gave the church.

Man, I tried giving away lessons for free to anyone willing to learn (at least 3 people). No one was willing to practice.
I know if they paid out of their own pocket for somebody to teach them, they would've took it more seriously.
