Key of C... I, IV, V.... Huh?
« on: December 12, 2004, 03:25:11 PM »
I was playing with some friends today and the lead guitarist starts this improv that stumps us all... Then he belts out... "key of C, playing the I, IV, V..." Perhaps I was the only one who didn't get it (and I still don't)...

Can someone give me some type of enlightenment on this that I can actually put into practice?

Thanks!

Which instrument do you play?

I, IV, V is a progression. It tells you where the music is going and generally what note to play for that change. There is a lot of information here about progressions. You should find something with a search.

The musician meant key of C, I, IV, V . . . . that means play a C chord (I), an F chord (IV) and a G chord (V).

Be Blessed . . .

B3Wannabe,

I play the bass guitar...sorry, should have included that information, but since this is the bass guitar forum, I just assumed...

I'll check out what the site has on progression info. Thanks!

BBoy,

Ahhhh, now I see. I don't play chords on my bass, so I'll have to figure out how that translates to how I'm supposed to play...

I've only been playing a short time, and I can figure out the root notes for that, but it's all the "stuff in between" that I'm still learning how to negotiate

No problem. I assumed that you played bass guitar also, but I just wanted to make sure. I didn't want to give you information that you wouldn't use. Anyway, I'll make a post of how the major progressions look on the bass buitar. (E bass)

Thanks B3....

It looks like I'm going to have to break down and get an instructor.
