Spring Recital
« on: April 22, 2009, 07:33:16 AM »
I am practicing How Great Thou Art, for my spring recital 04/28/09 and as I practice this song sometimes I just get caught up.  I am really feeling this song.  WOW! this a powerful praise and worship song.  The more I practice this song the better I get.  Now here is the problem I am having a very difficult time following the sheet music, I am afraid that I will put to much of my self expression into this song, and being it is a recital that might not be to pleasing to my piano teacher.

Question: What would you do if this was your situation?

Is it for a grade?

What are the criteria for the awards?

attendance, theory and lessons. If you recieve awards for all three than you qualify to be slected as student of the year, if you are selected to be student of the year you recieve a cash award.

I dunno...you may want to stick with the sheet music. I remember putting too much of myself into a classical piece at my piano recital and my piano teacher was very, very angry with me. She said "I bet Chopin is rolling over in his grave." :D Could be different with playing gospel music though :-\

If these are the only criteria and it's a gospel music recital, then I'd say you should have no problem playing the song (the notes on the page) as the Spirit leads.

 :)

Now, if you get up and start buckin' and shoutin', bye-bye 'Student of the Year' award.  :D

If it is a classical-style recital, maybe you could play the arrangement as written, then ask if you could briefly improvise on it...

Its not really a classical style recital, some of the students are singing solos, too but not me, yet.  My grand daughter is singing Amazing Grace after she play her piano solo and duet.

Whatever you play, even if it is Chopin, you should go with the Spirit ... even if it costs you man's award.

I wouldnt go far out there, but I would add some of my own flavor to it. But I also wouldnt take lessons with someone who doesent encourage each student to develop their own style

Why not just go say all this to your piano teacher and see what he/she says about it.  Maybe you're stressing over nothing.  If you're being judged on how well u know the music itself, then stick to the music as much as possible.  If not, just do your best and be proud no matter the outcome.

Thanks to everyone for all the good advice.  I saw the recital program yesterday evening and I am one of the candidates for the student of the year. :)
