Hey LGM fam, I need your help......again :-)
« on: September 21, 2012, 10:54:54 AM »
Hey LGM'ers, I need your help. Last year I did a sit-down interview with one of Kirk Franklin's producers and band director, Shaun Martin. Several days before the actual interview I asked you guys for any questions you wanted me to ask him, and it turned out to be a great success.....its not everyday that we get access to someone in that position and we can pick their mind.

Well, this year we have stepped it up. After several months of trying to make arrangements, I finally got the green light yesterday. I am putting together a film that will be shot in a documentary format, that will take you behind the scenes of the KINGS MEN TOUR, but it will be from the BAND'S perspective as opposed to the artist's.  What goes into making something this big, with this many A-list artists, using only one band?

Last year I got a lot of great response from you when I asked you to submit questions for S.Martin interview, and in that same spirit I would LOVE to get any questions you may have or anything you may have been curious about for a large tour/concert such as this.....again from the BAND perspective. Although I will cross paths with the actual artists that are in the tour (Donnie, Marvin, Kirk, Israel), my focus will not be on them. So please keep your requests from that angle.

As we do the video shoot, I try to include all of your questions (or comments) in the documentary and be sure they are directed to the appropriate person who can best address it.

The tour will be here in Dallas Tuesday evening (September 25th) and I plan on being in the trenches with the band most of the day. I will have a camera crew, photographer, myself, and probably another PCH staff member.

So, think about it and let me know your thoughts please. I want to make the most of the opportunity!

Best Regards,
TJ

Interesting....just saw the King's Men in LA on Thurs, Sept. 20, 2012. The band was slamming - and played for 3 hours...

It would be cool to get some insight on the business side of things.

Ask them how they go about re-arranging the songs to give them a fresher feel. I went to Kirk's concert and the band sampled a lot of music. They were playing The Roots during "Brighter Day" and a couple of others I can't think of off the top of my head. I love that.

And from one TJ to another, this is a pretty cool idea.

Can u elaborate?

Logistics and economics of the Tour, and the rehearsal process.
For instance, I was surprised when WorldVision was announced as one of the sponsors of the tour - at $35+ per ticket, thought it would be self-supporting...

lol...thanx.

I'm always up for trying new things, especially when I have the access, the resources, and the opportunity.......i don't want to let it go to waste. Rather than just hanging out back stage, goofing off and taking phone pix of everybody, i figured i'd try to do something a little more productive....LOL. So, we'll see how it turns out.

When its all said and done, the video shoot may be junk....or it may turn out to be gold....either way i'm not going to let the moment pass without giving it a go!

their opinion of using a track versus a live band? (they may be a bit biased)

Digital vs analog instruments?

Work Life balance?

Does your faith factor in or is this just business as usual?

How do you come together as a band if you have not been playing together long?

What is the creative process like for interesting breaks? Does someone just say hey we played a break like this on this track or does everyone just try something and build off of that?

How do you decide order of the songs?

What happens if you get sick?

typical number hours per day spent preparing?

Have they ever had to play in a band with someone they did not like and if so how did they work it out?

Are there ever any problems with differences in denominational beliefs? please give an example without using names

how did you start out playing?

Is playing a song a technical endeavor or a artistic endeavor?

How do you handle mistakes during a live performance?

Do you still feel the thrill?

Who is the biggest gearhead on the tour? Whats the one unusual item that they carry with them?

How do you all spend your down time on the tour? Basketball? Gym? etc.?

For the single cats; how many marriage proposals have you gotten on the tour? Any stalkers?

Does anyone bring their fam on tour; if so how do you make it work?

Whats one thing you would say to the fans?

In the old school gospel concerts, there was always a time for sharing your faith, testimonies, and an alter call? Do you all still make that a part of your concerts today? If not, why? Who does?

I just wanted to drop a quick note to say THANK YOU to all that helped out with the above questions.  We had an AWESOME time doing the documentary, we were able to get a lot of the questions in to a variety of people, from the band,  sound techs, to the managers of the artists, and much props to artists too...Donnie, Israel, Kirk, and Marvin. Although this shoot wasn't directly about them, I had no intention of directly asking them for an interview, they didn't even know we would be there. BUT, they made themselves readily available for the camera and were very open and candid for us......it made the shoot that much more special!!!!

I'll keep you posted for when the show will be released. THANX AGAIN!
