That black squishy thing on the neck of the bass is just a scrunchy...haha, but it's used to silence the bass, because when the bass it's just sitting, any type of vibration actually makes it sound....He actually demonstrates why he uses it. I asked the same thing...
The thing at the bottom by the frets is a MIDI controller to convert to the MIDI signal.
