Fender prices went way up!
« on: May 05, 2009, 10:01:51 PM »
I was in Guitar Center yesterday & Fender jacked there prices way up, I'd say about 30-40% higher. The same American Jazz 5 I looked at 4 to 5 months ago, went from 1299 retail to 1999. Nothing different, nothing upgraded, the same exact bass.

Errrbody going up bruh.  Gotta make up for the current state of the market or at least they have a great excuse to try and make a little more money.

Moving prices up, in this state of the economy doesn't make sense. If people have less money to spend, or are not spending the money they do have; moving the prices up ONLY ensures that the product will stay in the stores and on the shelves longer.

I do not know or understand what retailers are thinking about.

Lord, what is we gon do...

Yes there prices has gone up,but the quality hasn't. I mean the socalled New American Standard is being built built with cheaper materials and the playability is ok,but for the prices they're asking I told my Fender rep they are going to have to step up the product as a whole.
I told him if you're asking for Boutique Jazz basses prices, then Fender has to ante up the ( questionable ) quality

when you see prices go up, dont always blaim the brand it may be the retailer. I am not saying it is one or the other but it could be one or the other. Just my 2cents.

They jack the prices up so when they throw in that 25%-30% sale people will jump all over them thinking they are getting a good deal especially if they have not been up on what the pricing has been.

I know you guys know the Warwick Corvette 6-string?  When I was considering buying one a year ago, they were $1600.  If you check musicianfriend.com now they are over $2100 for the EXACT same bass.  I don't understand that concept

I think thats when you really know its time to hit up rondomusic and get some work done on one of their basses. You'll end up with a custom bass that has what you want for way less than list prices for the "top of line basses."
you got to hear numbers

well to the ordinary public, it makes no sense at all, but to the seasoned business person, it makes absolute perfect sense (not that im a seasoned business person).

on top of the % off sale prices that get people to think they're getting a good deal (Macy's does this all the time, I worked there so i know. lol) theres 2 other big points. so...

1) big % off sale fools purchasers, without seller actually taking a big hit, if one at all

2) fear of prices climbing yet higher, many consumers will bite the bullet and purchase now to avoid the later higher price. so you
buy, you buy now, and you pay more than you would have a short time ago.

3) everyone doesnt have the same price threshold, so there are still people who will buy up to a certain price point. the strategy is that the higher price point will offset fewer sales. and when high-price/low-sales revenue exceeds the would be low-price/high-sales revenue, then anything beyond that point is all profit. (in some cases this actually happens, but its very unpredictable. in most cases you do this to lessen the hit you wouldve taken with unsold inventory...you can always drop the price later)

and that concludes todays business class. be sure to read chapter 12 and prepare for next weeks quiz. lol (just kidding on the quiz. i know some people's heart just stopped. lol)
For my God... let "Golden Axe" prevail.

An alternative take on this whole situation is that the value of Fender Basses fell because the were so affordably priced. I know this may seem like a bizarre way to look at business, but it is very common.

For example, a beverage company decides to sell a bottled water product to 3 levels of consumer: thrift, everyday low, and prestige. The thrift consumer could care less about brand or quality, so they offer filtered water to that segment. The everyday low consumer has some concern about brand, but want a good value, so they offer spring water from some unknown source. The prestige consumer could care less  about price, as long as people know they only drink the best, so they offer water exclusively bottled at an exclusive source, which arrives in an exclusive bottle.

Apply this same model to musical instruments and you get the same result. At this time, Fender is positioning the Squier Made by Fender as the thrift brand, MIM Fender (and every other foreign made instrument) as the everyday low with great value and American Made as the prestige brand. We had a great ride with the lower prices, but it had to come to an end at sometime. Besides, if you own a decent bass and decide to sell it, I know you want your perceived value. How do I know? because I see all the inflated sale prices on the auction sites :)

This time it DEFINITELY is Fender.  This was starting to see air time on Talkbass several months ago.  People were openly discussing going out and getting their new Fenders before the price increase.  Also a couple stores that I've been in lately have had signs up saying "get your new Fender now before the price increase". Even the Fender website had information on when the new prices would go in effect.  You can go to the website and see that all the list prices have gone up.

Peace,

James
