Lessons
« on: May 12, 2009, 11:29:50 AM »
I'm thinking about taking lessons..

Anybody have any advice on anything while I search for a good teacher?

What concerns should I have looking for an instructor?

Also, what are the average rates for lessons?

Is there a such thing as bi-weekly lessons?

I want lessons too. One thing i think you have to consider is your relative playing level. Don't look for a teacher that will start you off with "Greensleeves" and cowboy chords if you are already advanced beyond that.

Here in MD the average rates i have seen are $25/30 minute lesson.

Plus is there a style you want to be good at? Look for the teacher to teach you that.

Lessons here in the Detroit area typically go for $15/half hour. One thing that I think is important is that you should have good interaction with your instructor. Most instructors are used to kids who don't ask a lot of questins. Find one that's not intimidated or offended when you ask tons of questions (I typically do, there are no stupid questions...).

My belief is you learn jazz, you learn everything you will ever need.  :)

true if you only want to play jazz...lol. but i'm being serious. mastering jazz is a lifelong pursuit....and it's hard to break out of that mold because you have to be immersed in it 24-7.
