I like challenges like this, because it makes me feel that all the practicing is worthwhile. Being able to play on the spot also opens up doors for future gigs. ;)

If you bring a bass to a musical around here, there's a good chance you're going to play for everyone who sings. It's not bad if its a song you've played or at least heard, but those other times trying to follow organ foot pedals and keyboardist pinky fingers and people yelling notes at you can be a little stressful. Good thing about gospel is that a lot of it is repetitive and if you've been playing any amount of time usually you can feel your way through a song pretty well.

There was a time, early on in my playing, that I wouldn't dare try to play along with other churches, groups, etc., because I would be afraid I would mess up. Now I just say a prayer, take a deep breath, and go for it.

Good thing about gospel is that a lot of it is repetitive and if you've been playing any amount of time usually you can feel your way through a song pretty well.

Amen to that! :)

I told a young kid not to long ago that knowing the bass like the back of your hand is definitely a good thing!!!  it's been plenty of times where the keyboard player called out the notes until i picked the progression.

That's how I started.  The MOM would call out the bassline and I would play it as he called it out.  After the song was over, I would write it out.  The next time we played it, I would read it (if I needed to).
