What is the formula for Preacher type Chords?
« on: May 28, 2009, 10:50:13 AM »
This is something I've been struggling with.... I can play nice melodies, talk music, and nice worship stuff during prayer, but when the minister starts praying real hard and you have to give those nice thunder type chords, I get completely lost!  Now I saw a guy who was still learning do pretty well with his chords. On his bass line, he did  F,F#,G,G#, and maybe a couple of notes after that, then he went right back to the F, and started all over again.  But I couldn't tell what he was doing in his right hand. Is there a method to follow with this?

Well, the basic pattern is:

3 / 1 chord, or 1 dominant type chord
4 / 4 chord, or 4 dominant type chord
#4 / #4 dim7. chord
5 / 1 chord, or 5 dominant type chord

Everybody does their own version of that, but afterwards there is no set pattern. Some people just do a little run, then get right back to 3. I personally do some kind of 2-5-1 before going back to 3. Then, there's the walk-up to 1:

5 / 5 dominant type chord
6 / 6 dominant type chord
#6/b7  /  #6/b7 dominant type chord
7 / 7 dominant type chord
1 / 1 dominant type chord

If you can do any of that above, then you can survive doing preacher chords or anywhere those type chords are needed.

I've tried this, but the stuff I've found is not giving me a formula to follow.

7 / 7 dominant type chord
1 / 1 dominant type chord

If you can do any of that above, then you can survive doing preacher chords or anywhere those type chords are needed.

So for that basic pattern, if I'm in the key of F.... I would play an A on the bass and a F chord in my right hand? And what would the dominate chord be in F, is that a C major chord?

Ha ha!!!   I often try to watch vids of other musicians on youtube but there's a part of me that would rather refine my own style.

O.K., maybe I should explain my explanation with an example, LOL. Since u want F, I'll do it in F:

Quote
3 / 1 chord, or 1 dominant type chord

This means 3 in the bass and some kind of 1 chord in the RH.

A / A-C-F *F/A
A / A-C-Eb-F *F7/A
A / G-C-Db-F *Fadd9(#5)/A

Quote
4 / 4 chord, or 4 dominant type chord

This means a 4 in the bass and some kind of 4 chord in the bass:

Bb / Bb-D-F *Bb
Bb / Ab-Bb-D-F or Bb / Ab-D-F *Bb7
Bb / Ab-C-D-F *Bb9
Bb / Ab-C-D-G *Bb13

Quote
#4 / #4 dim7. chord

This means a #4 in the bass and a #4 diminished 7th chord:

B / Ab-B-D-F *Bdim7

Quote
5 / 1 chord, or 5 dominant type chord

This means a 5 in the bass and some kind of 1 or 5 chord:

C / A-C-F *F/C
C / G-Bb-D-F *C11
C / Bb-D-F *C11
C / Bb-C-E-G *C7
C / Bb-C-E-G# *C7(#5)
C / E-Ab-Bb-Eb *C7(#5/#9)

Man, it's so many chords you can choose from. It all depends on what sound you want. Then, there's the walk-up to 1:

Quote
5 / 5 dominant type chord
6 / 6 dominant type chord
#6/b7  /  #6/b7 dominant type chord
7 / 7 dominant type chord
1 / 1 dominant type chord

Basically, just dominant 7th or any kind of dominant chord built on those scale degrees:

C / Bb-C-E-G *C7
D / C-D-F#-A *D7
Eb / Db-Eb-G-Bb *Eb7
E / D-E-G#-B *E7
F / Eb-F-A-C *F7

or

C / Bb-E-A-C *C13
D / C-F#-B-D *D13
Eb / Db-G-C-Eb *Eb13
E / D-G#-C#-E *E13
F / Eb-A-D-F *F13

Wow, thanks! I'm printing all this out right now...."But when you say some kind of one chord", are you saying that you don't have to neccessarily use the 1 chord of that particular key?

I mean a 1 chord in that particular key. You could try to use a 1 chord from another key if it works.
