Any suggestions
« on: May 27, 2009, 07:36:48 AM »
I'm trying to rely  less on ear and more on theory when i do runs, licks, or whatever you want to call them. So I was wondering if any body knows some good scales besides the major and minor pentatonics that I could use to help me take my playing to a new level.

In a minor situation, I would try running the minor blues scale. It sounds cool, and you can add licks and feel off of it. Let me know how you make out.

the trick isnt to learn a "new scale" but to learn which notes to pick out of each scale. the major and minor pentatonic scales are nothing more than subsets of the major and minor scales, respectively.

you dont run up and down the scales in order, as is, note for note. you vary your movements, which notes to pick out. sometimes u might be able to play notes outside of the scale.

watched a video on youtube and picked up this hot riff a bass player did. examined it to learn it and im like, i know this stuff, so why didnt i ever think to play it this way?? frustrating when its so obvious, yet wasnt obvious to you before.

its really about thinking differently, and having ur different thinking translate to different playing.

just my opinion though

also know the diminished scale, great to play when the song goes to the b5 (doesnt work in all cases though). diminished scale is playing in flat 3rds. so if you were in C it would be

1 - b3 - b5 - 6 - 1
C - Eb - Gb - A - C

Hey Kelz,

I have a question do you read music? Because along with along with modes. Just practicing all scales and different interval (skipping around) will help you with that. I have been playing for a while and playing 2 octave scales across the fingerboard will open youe ears too.

I don't read but, I do know my modes. I also realize that runs and scales are two different things. But, generally all runs are based off of a scale. I was just looking for new scales that I could learn and apply to my playing. I just don't want to be complacent with all my stuff being based off of major or minor.
