I got a P&W situation
« on: May 26, 2009, 09:26:12 PM »
Okay so here it is.  Ive been recently appointed MOM at my church.  The music ministry has come a LOOOONGGG way, all glory to God.  When I first got here a yr and a half ago, they didnt know how to come in with the music, let alone sing parts to give you an idea.  Out of about the average 8-12, only about 2 can carry a note most of the time.  I never complained because they sincerely were ignorant about the music aspect of choir, singing, dynamics, etc.  With Gods help they can now sing whole songs with harmony, atleast two part most of the time (sjon has heard us :) ).  Long story short, one sister had asked the previous director to lead praise team, which he approved.  Hes humble, and didnt know much himself.  The thing is this, she cant SING.  When I mean cant sing, I mean I can play the phattest, most gigantic, simple intro and she will break out in a key 1 1/2 steps off.  Shes tone deaf and cant lead in rhythm.  Its pretty bad.  Thing is she said God told her to lead P&W.  I dont mess with you when you put that in.  I mean, shes saved and everything, Im just, I dont know.  Im just wondering, can you really be a P&W leader and not be able to sing or any of those things?  I mean, its hard because pretty much no one else has much skill in the area aside from me, but I only lead when shes not there or to bail her or them out.  I dont even want to LOL.  Advice?

Your situation sounds a little familiar.

If he's tone deaf then he doesn't know he can't sing; someone needs to tell him. You can also try some one on one vocal training or something.

Thing is she said God told her to lead P&W.  I dont mess with you when you put that in.

BBG, God told me that you're going to give me $1000. Just kidding but you see where I'm leading. If you're head of the music ministry, God should cue you in also. Or God may have told her that she would lead P&W but that could very well be 5 yrs down the road also.

Bottom line is whoever has the final authority between MOM and P&W leader should make the call for what is best for the ministry.

Maybe she can pull a talk-sing thing like Kirk Franklin and have someone else start/sing the song.

My brotha, from a musical standpoint, you've got to remove her, bruh.  :-\

My question to you is can she set the atmosphere with praise/worship?

Are people led to focus on God and His son when she leads?

If the answer is, 'No' to either of these questions, then, from a spiritual standpoint, she must be removed.

You know like I know, music ain't a time to be playin'. Folks need to know that they know that they know. Most don't; it's just something they like to do.  :-\

Say That, seem like God always tell folks stuff they want to do anyway.

Agreed. I never buy into that phrase when folks use it. My response would be something like, 'Well, I'll have to pray and seek God for direction on this.'

The worst thing that can happen is they leave. And that will tell you where their heart lies.

I'm so tired of folks thinking it's NOT about producing a good sound.  ::) :-\

It's almost funny. The church will allow people to be in a position that doesn't suit them even if it hurts the ministry.

The choir is the worst at this. We let people lead songs and worship service when it's not right. You wouldn't just put a person on keyboard that can't play. Or a person on drums that can't keep rhythm. So why let someone sing if they can't keep in key or know when they are out of time?? I don't understand this, lol.

You may can teach a person to play an instrument. But can you teach a person to sing??? I've never seen it done. You may can teach to hold a rough background but I've not seen more than that.

When we put someone to head a ministry who doesn't have a gift or talent for that ministy, that's like saying that's all God deserves.

This is one of my pet peeves in the church... ::)

Say That, I feel like people dont the ministry of music serious enough, I hear folk say "Well it aint about the music, it's about the words" which is true, however if your organist sound like my 2 year old niece, then they need to get right on up and sit down in the pew. Cause if it was just about the words, we could still be singing It Is No Secret and have a full church, young and old.

Just like preaching if somebody aint called to preach, it's gone show when they get up there and try, singing the same way, sat down if you can't sing, cause it's gone show, especially if you got choir members like me, just can't hold them facial expressions, no matter how hard they try. For me it's hard for me to pay attention to the words when the music and singing sound bad, so P&W with this type of person would usher me right on out of Worship.

My pastor always tells me when he hears something "not quite right" back in the choir and he looks back...he won't look at me. He says I always have the funniest expressions. LOL, I can't help it.

There's someone that's one person over from me that sings out of key constantly and loud. I use to sing by her but I moved myself (like it really helped moving one person down), lol.

She has this mind set where to her it doesn't matter if you sing out of key. What's important is you sing from your heart.  And that may be true to a point. But if you have trouble hearing yourself out of key...then you should sing from your heart in the shower..or in the car...or anytime your alone... That's just my opinion.

But who am I to say....I'm sure God appreciate's the effort.

she said God told her to lead P&W.

That's in the same category with, "God showed me in a vision that you're supposed to be my spouse."
