i don't know man, it's hard for me to vibe with that...no emotion, no connection, just funky chords and altered scale runs...sometimes jazz can be more wanky than shred ever dreamed of being...that's just my humble opinion though..

He's actually playing a tune. I just can't figure it out...
What I love about this, is his use of cluster voicings and his dexterity.
I hear you about jazz being  as much wank, as some bad shred. This kid is pretty good though.
It probably comes down to how much "jazz", one listens to.
Playing over changes with extended shapes and altered chords, is just part of the formula.
Actually "hearing" those scales and shapes in context is what really counts.

Sounds pleasant to me... :)
Have you been baptized in Jesus' name and received the Holy Ghost?

I actually have to agree with jlynnb1 on this.

This guy is ripping stuff that I cannot play (or even close), but the thing that really caught my focus was the vacant stare he had while playing.

I'm not saying that he's not emoting, but it seemed so routine to him.

Let's step back to Derek Trucks-land for a minute lol--even someone who is admittedly stoic while playing, you can hear, feel and even see the emotion from him (maybe in subtleties, but still, it's there).

I just didn't see it, hear it, or feel it here.

Was it good? Absolutely. Was I moved? Hardly.

No disrespect, I'm just putting my .02 in.

We can agree to disagree ;D!

Definitely no disrespect taken.

Luckily, we have this forum to show each other different things, and talk about it.

College kids are paying thousands for this type of sustained interaction :D

We SHOULD do a lot more of this. Bring in things we like, to spark healthy debate.

yeah, i wasn't taking anything away from his ability, he can obviously play. and if he were to play something else that he seemed to be in to, connecting with, he might impress me more.

like Jay said, he's doing some stuff I know I can't do....and there definitely shredders who are just as emotion-less....i don't care for either, lol.

Sounds ok to me.
The runs and stuff and his facial expressions sound and look like he's done a fair amount of practicing to where he doesn't even have to think about where his hands will go.
As the old saying goes, "learn everything and then forget it and just play".
He was just playing, imho.
Music theory is not always music reality.

I agree with Dave.
I like what I see and hear. True, he has those changes down to memory like braille. This could be his normal warm-up exercise during a sound check, practice session or when you go to GC to check out a new axe.  8)

I wonder if this young brother can transcribe what he's playing on to manuscript paper. I'm sure he's very gifted, that's why Israel and the crew scooped him up before anyone else could.
I say look out world, we have another smooth and young guitar player.

I think song is playing in the first video is a standard jazz tune called "Misty". If not, he is definitely playing pieces of it.

Misty?
Hmm, I don't think it's that...
I think it's a gospel song.
I have definitely been wrong before ;D!
Wish we could somehow ask him about it.
