For Sale?!?!?
« on: June 08, 2009, 07:02:02 PM »
Hey LGM,

I'm thinking about selling as many as three of my basses.  Now why in the worl' would I be doin' somethin' like that?

GAS.  Old school GAS.  I bought a Music Man Sabre in 1979 and kept it for 20 years.  Sold it in 1999 and regret it to this day.  I have my eye on a 1979 Sabre now.  Whether or not I buy it is really not that big a deal.  Thing is, it would make #8.  I have a hard time justifying owning and juggling playing time for 8 basses.

Sooooooo..........

Here's what I'm thinkin'

Devon Diamond J5, seriously custom (13 piece neck!).  I'm the 3rd owner.  My guess is that ordering a new one to this spec would run about $3K.  I'll put it up on Talkbass for $1,800.  So for LGM, $1,600

Sunburst Jazz Bass, There's a thread somewhere on LGM where I built this bass up from parts.  Started with a Mexican Fender Jazz.  Added an Audere pre-amp, Aero pickups, rosewood All-Parts neck with pearl inlays and binding, chrome hardware.  I'll list it on Talkbass for $550.  LGM can take it for $475.

Black P-Bass, Built this one starting with the neck from the Mexican Jazz (it came to me with a P-Bass neck, so...).  Picked up a light weight body on TB.  Added Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder, black BadassII bridge, black tuners and DR Black Beauty strings.  $425 on Talkbass, $350 0n LGM.

Peace,

James

You'd think I would have thought about that.....

How 'bout add $20 for shipping.  That oughta cover the cost of boxes and peanuts and what-not.  I'll eat the actual postage.

How do you juggle playing time for 7? My wife would hem and haw over buying a 2nd one. The only way I can get by with the 4 I got is by paying next to nothing for scrap parts and piecing them together.

It ain't easy, but it's a nice "problem" to have.

I almost always have a 5 with me at church.  So that narrows it down to Alembic, Marchlewski, Devon and Roscoe.  Roscoe only if I need a fretless (maybe 25 - 30% of the time).  The Marchlewski needs some fretwork, so it's sorta out of circulation.  That leaves the 13 1/2 pound Alembic 5 or the under 9 lb Devon 5.  How much other stuff am I carrying?.  If I went by tone alone, I'd have my two Alembics and the Roscoe and call it a day.

As far as 4 strings are concerned, I have three.  The Sunburst Jazz gets almost all of the 4 string work.  Now that I'm selling that I'll rely on the Alembic 4 until I get my hands on a Music Man Sabre.  I try not to take the Alembic 4 into unknown surroundings because of its history, otherwise, I have no problem with playing that as a main bass.

When I'm done with all this buying / selling / trading I'll have

2 fretted 4 strings (Alembic and a to be acquired Music Man Sabre)
2 fretted 5 strings (Alembic and Marchlewski)
1 fretless 5 string (Roscoe)

That's a manageable lot.

Peace,

James

I had to downsize as well. I have my 2 Lakland 5 strings (55-01, JO5) and currently a custom jazz 4 that I will be selling to recoup for this jazz I'm buying. I think 3 basses are enough for me.

At one time I had two Fender Jazz basses, a fretted V and a fretless 4 (both passive). But then I played a Schecter Studio 5 and suddenly that Jazz V's days were numbered! :)

The Fender has nylon tapewound strings and is my go-to bass for jazz and playing with a piano. The Schecter will get roundwound D'Addario strings eventually and it compliments the keyboard and organ used by the gospel group.

I tried the 6 string thing for a couple years.  Learned two very important things...1)  I like really thin neck profiles (back of neck to front of fingerboard) 2) I suck at 6 string

Here's a link to a YouTube of me playing the Devon.  I'm playing through a 50W practice amp that doesn't do well in managing the B string, but you can still get a good feel for the tone.

If I only had $1600 so I could grab that Devon from you.  That top is absolutely stunning.  Looks like you picked that up from The Low End.

I got it from a guy (Chris Meal / Mr. Majestic on TalkBass)who got it from Low End.

Chris sold it to me to make room for a CallowHill he's had on order.  If he's replacing this with a CallowHill, then CallowHill MUST be fiyah.  They certainly look great (umm.......Jeremy?....pictures????)

Just figured I'd add the same "spiffs" here that I added for the Talkbass threads on these basses......

Buy the Devon for $1,600 (listed for $1,800 on TB) and I'll throw in a Dunlop Crybaby Bass Wah

Buy the Black P-Bass for $350 (listed for $425 on TB) and I'll throw in a Zoom 506

Peace,

James
