Learning After 30
« on: June 22, 2009, 07:55:57 AM »
Quick Q for all of you seasoned players... how old were you when you first picked up the bass and started learning/playing regularly?  When did you say: Hey, I want to do this and I want to do it for God's glory?

Thx

I wouldn't call myself seasoned, but I picked up bass at 17 and I'm 19 now and I think i am a decent bass player. It doesn't take as long to get good enough to play for a church as you would think. Unless the church already has a bass player who is killin every sunday.
you got to hear numbers

Honestly, you've already answered your own question.  If you do it for God's glory age will never be a factor. Could you imagine Noah asking God, "Am I too old to learn to build an ark?"

Remember Phillipians 4:13 and start thumpin and slappin for Jesus lol

I was 37 when I started. I took lessons for a year, began playing at church in 9 months and now play for several choirs, groups and have performed at several different events and also give lessons for beginners and for those who desire to read and learn theory. I played for 20 years through college so I already knew how to read and understood theory musically. I do wish I had began to play much earlier in my life but I think If I had I would not have been playing for God, at least not right away. Playing has been a blessing for me and I am thankful that God has given me a little ability to play for Him. I strive to get better and better each day so I suggest you stay prayed up, strap on that bass and give God the Glory and watch Him reward you.
May God's Grace & Mercy smile upon you!

Well, I really don't play bass yet, I just pick with it. But I started playing the keyboard around 33. Within my 1st 6 months of learning, I was playing for the praise team. It's been 6 yrs now and I play for 3 different music groups.
The funny thing about it, is that I grew up with a piano in the house and never really messed with it. My mother and brother even played piano.
The reason why I started was because we didn't have a musician at the church I went to so I just stepped in to fill the gap.

It's never to late.

I picked up the bass again after 20 years.
I started playing at 10 yrs old and played for 10 years and
stopped with I joined the Marines.

I must admit I do not practice until I'm asked to play somewhere.

I started playing when I was 19 and for the past 27 years I have been picking up the bass and putting it down.  One day at church two deacons?s tag teamed me in the hall.  As I was coming down the stairs, one said ?there he is? and the other moved in and asked me to come sing with the men?s choir.  After I got him to take his hand from around my neck - just kidding!  :),  I told them I can?t sing but I play a little bass and they said, come on God can use you.  I have been playing for the church for the past 8 years.  I?m still not where I would like to be as far as my ability to play the bass but if you do it for God?s glory he will bless you.  I?ve had some high and low working with different MOM?s, musicians & scheduling but before I play I ask God to let me play one note that would bless someone and it?s all good after that.  God will can and will use you for his glory.  It is something about that bottom that just makes me feel good!

The great thing is that if you have a heart for playing for God it will work out no matter how late in life you start to play. I have learned from players younger than me, and I have had others playing longer than myself aske me about some things that I do when I play. You will learn from everyone because everyone has something to bring to the table and give. In my experience bass players have been the most "unselfish" musicians that I have come across. I have watched other musicians at various times and places and sometimes the attitudes were just unreal, and these were people playing for the Lord! I have had many bass players invite me to practice or to gigs or just sit down one on one to show me some things. To me, there is nothing like being a member of the bass fraternity. Nothing against other musicians but I am just going on my experience over the past 8 years that I have been playing.
May God's Grace & Mercy smile upon you!
