Why do Gospel Drummers only play in 4/4 or 6/8?
« on: June 22, 2009, 04:13:37 PM »
I think that your crazy fills sound great in 4/4 and 6/8.  Why can't you do it in 7 or 5 or 10 or 13?  I would love to here that.  Not to put you all down but to expand you all as musicians.

How many gospel tunes do you hear that are not in 4/4 or 6/8 or do you listen to gospel music at all? Somebody needs to take break from youtube!  ;)

IMHO, the drummers are playing in the time signature of what that particular song was written in...Gospel music has a sound that distinguishes it from other genre's and the 6/8 and 4/4 churchy/ praise and worship feel is what's been known to sell.

You have some artist who have gone out of the box and let their musicians explore and create in other time signatures but that stuff isn't very mainstream. In the record biz , you have to do what sells and puts money into the pockets of the big wigs..it's not that the drummers can't play in odd timing signatures, the songs just aren't written that way.. :-\

I understand that gospel music is in 4/4 or 6/8.  Yes I do watch youtube, Yes I play in church.  But do you not notice that pretty much all gospel drummers sound pretty much the same.  Yes I do understand playing the genre.  I would love to hear other advanced material going on in the back ground.  I myself, love to switch up meters and to move the time around depending on the fraising.  Just listen to my jack trading 4 track.  The song is in 4/4 but I sub 5/4 time signature that is still the same length as the 4/4 time.  Implied Time just one of the many tricks that I use.

Gospel music as well as many other genres are targeted for the listener and not the musician. Most people on the planet are not musicians and cannot grasp odd times and different time signatures because they are simply not musicians.

If you want people to throughly enjoy and support what you do then they must first understand what you are doing. The young as well as the old audience in gospel music want to be able to clap and dance without having to think about when to come back on the one.

I know many musicians want to hear what you have stated, but that is not what gospel music is doing...atleast for right now. If you want to hear what you have described then there is a genre out there for it just like there is a style and genre for everything else. If you want help musicians expand their minds then give them examples and tell them where they can find material that displays the idea you're trying to get across.

Its not just gospel.... I dare to say that the vast majority of all music (especialy in the US) is written in 4, 6,3 or 12. These time signatures are easily understood by your common listener. Could you imagine someone trying to shout in 19/16.... That would be interesting! LOL!

Poet, how bout you write a gospel song in one of these odd meters and tell me how it works out. I've heard a couple odd metered gospel songs....there's a reason only a few more of us have bro. If you know how to execute a fill, then the meter doesn't even matter. You wanna hear US play different meters? Come to any of the sheds we're always throwing.
D.O.D. has a few odd metered joints on his project, as do I. Jeremy Haynes and Calvin Napper do also. Now that that I think about it, the only time we play straight is when we're ACCOMPANYING someone. GO FIGURE
Here's a question....are you posing this same question to the guys playing behind Faith Hill or Kenny Chesney ?/? ?/? What about the girls playing behind Beyonce or Musiq Soulchild?? I'm sure you'll get the same answers. Let me know

I could compare this question to someone asking, "why does a car only go forward only when you put it in Drive?"  Or, "why does a hamburger only taste like beef?"
When you've done your very best, do even better.
